Today on the steps of New York City Hall, Sisters In Purple brought survivors, advocates, community organizations, and city leaders together to mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The survivor-led gathering, “Bridging the Gap,” called for stronger connections between survivors, services, communities, and the systems meant to protect them. We were only together for an hour, but the time was filled with emotion and urgency.

This was my second time photographing Sisters In Purple. I’m grateful to continue documenting this community and the people doing this work.

We had a time today at the Jefferson Houses Community Pop-Up! 💛

We Will Rise had such a joyous time connecting with residents, young people, families, and community partners. Thank you to SAVE/GOSO for creating a welcoming space for us to come together. @gosonyc @save.harlem

The pop-up series brings resources and services directly to Jefferson Houses residents while creating opportunities for meaningful conversations, stronger relationships, and a consistent, positive presence in the community. It’s part of a shared effort to support public safety through connection and care.

When love is real, joy is present. We will rise. ✨

Together, We Will Continue to Rise. 💙

We Will Rise was honored to attend Council Member Elsie Encarnación’s District 8 Budget Town Hall, where we gained valuable insight into how our community’s budget is being invested to strengthen East Harlem and the South Bronx.

It was an informative evening that left us encouraged and hopeful. We learned about major investments in:
✨ Parks and public spaces
✨ Schools and educational resources
✨ Senior services
✨ Mental health and wellness
✨ Workforce development
✨ Public safety initiatives
✨ Community organizations and cultural institutions

One of the most meaningful parts of the evening was participating in the Public Safety breakout discussion. Community members came together to share ideas on how future funding can improve the quality of life across District 8.

We Will Rise proudly advocated for:
🔹 Expanded violence prevention and youth intervention programs
🔹 Year-round paid internships, apprenticeships, and employment opportunities for young people
🔹 More community centers and safe spaces, especially in NYCHA developments
🔹 Increased mental health and social work services
🔹 Improved street lighting and neighborhood safety
🔹 Greater investment in food security and quality-of-life initiatives
🔹 Strong partnerships between residents, schools, nonprofits, and public safety agencies

Real change happens when communities are invited to the table—and when our voices are heard. We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute our perspective and help shape a safer, healthier, and more equitable future for East Harlem and the South Bronx.

The conversation doesn’t end here. We look forward to continuing to advocate, collaborate, and serve alongside our neighbors and community partners.

Together, we will continue to rise. 💙

During the New York City Council's Gun Violence Awareness Month celebration, Council Member Yusef Salaam presented GOSO/SAVE with a proclamation recognizing the program's impactful work to reduce gun violence and build safer, stronger communities in East Harlem.

This recognition belongs to the outreach workers, violence interrupters, staff, partners, and community members who show up every day to create hope, prevent violence, and save lives. Together, we are proving that community-led solutions work.
