The Sustainable Materials Revolution is Here
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
One year after launching at Climate Week NYC 2025, Gotham Foundry convened for its first symposium on Sept. 23 on Columbia's Morningside campus. Researchers, entrepreneurs, city leaders, and community members gathered to discuss how New York City can accelerate regenerative materials, from lab innovation to market to workforce, across the fashion, construction, and health industries. Sessions spotlighted startups bringing lab-developed materials to market, with panel discussions on training a skilled workforce for New York's green economy and scaling startups from city to state markets. Led by Director Helen Lu, professor of biomedical engineering at Columbia, Gotham Foundry is a partnership that includes Columbia University, the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), Genspace, the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center, and SUNY's Fashion Institute of Technology, working with more than 20 community partners across the city. One of the many reasons Manhattanville is considered a leading hub for innovation and knowledge-based companies: @gothamfoundry - Innovation Triangle, West Harlem. Currently operating from @HarlemBiospace at the Mink Building @januspropertycompany - @gothamfoundry is New York City’s first open-source, open-door hub dedicated to sustainable materials. The consortium brings together Columbia University, CUNY Advanced Science Research Center, the Fashion Institute of Technology and Genspace. Its mission is to support early-stage deep-tech companies, research and development, and the creation of sustainable materials for buildings, fashion, food, packaging and medical devices—providing access to scientific expertise, specialized equipment, entrepreneurship programs and workforce training. Gotham Foundry adds another important connection within West Harlem’s Innovation Triangle, linking research, advanced technology and opportunities to bring new ideas from the laboratory to the marketplace. #gothamfoundry #manhattanville #westharlem #materialsscience #innovationtriangle

Registration closes Sept 18 for the @gothamfoundry Symposium: Regenerative Materials Across Industries, taking place Sept 23 during Climate Week at @ColumbiaEngineering. NYFIC and Gotham Foundry are proud to co-present the symposium’s third session, “Turbocharging the New York Innovation Pathway from City to State,” from 11:00 a.m. to noon. The conversation will bring together leaders from across New York’s innovation ecosystem to explore how the state can connect its strengths in agriculture, research, manufacturing, design, and entrepreneurship to advance both field-grown and lab-grown biomaterials. Panelists will also consider how the public and private sectors, academia, and industry partners can work together to accelerate the development of a more sustainable fashion and materials ecosystem across New York State. We hope you’ll join us. Register by Sept 18 through this link (find it in our Stories): https://columbiaengineering.campusgroups.com/CWCE/rsvp_boot #RegenerativeMaterials #ClimateWeek #SustainableMaterials

The sustainable materials revolution is here! To kick off Climate Week, we celebrated the launch of @gothamfoundry , a first-of-its-kind regenerative materials innovation hub. At the event, attendees viewed the Regenerative Vision exhibit of bio-based artwork, new materials, and clothing created by start-ups and material innovators across the city, and celebrated with collaborators and leaders of this initiative: @Columbia, @columbiagsapp, @asrc_gc, @fitnyc, @genspacenyc, @NYCEDC, and community partners. Gotham Foundry will be a destination for material innovation, accelerating deep tech research and commercialization across the fashion, construction, and health industries. Thank you to all exhibitors and partners at the kickoff! #ClimateWeek Learn more about the Initiative through our #linkinbio #ColumbiaEngineering Photo credit: Chris Taggart/Columbia Engineering @columbiaclimate @theclimategroup
