Last night I returned to Stage AE for round 2, another fun yet wild night of metal with Mastodon.

#mastodon #metal #concerts #pittsburgh #rock

I started out towards the front, but as the pit got more spread out I decided to head back, but not without grabbing some sick shots like this one first.

They played an absolutely incredible setlist. The last time I saw them was two years ago, when they played Leviathan in full, so this time around I go to hear more songs from their other albums, including the latest one.

John Baizley from Baroness came out to sing with Mastodon a little over halfway through the set, and he did a fantastic job singing the late Brent Hinds' vocal parts.

Hopefully Brann is able to get a new drum head for the rest of the tour.

Deafheaven was a huge surprise. I never really gave them much of a listen before the show, despite knowing that they were a very critically acclaimed band that a lot of people loved, but I got to understand why last night.

I had no idea that black metal mixed with shoegaze could have this much energy, especially from the audience.

Alcest went on first, which was another name I knew of but had not quite got around to hearing before.

Their music is very mellow, which is a little outside of my usual taste, but they performed very well, and I won't mind putting them on if I'm not in the mood for something heavy.

Last night, I got to check another band off of my bucket list, Black Label Society.

#blacklabelsociety #zakkwylde #concerts #metal #pittsburgh

I was absolutely blown away by how good they sounded. Obviously I knew Zakk Wylde was a great performer, but sometimes outdoor stages can be hit or miss with sound quality.

The setlist was great too. Some of their greatest hits, some newer songs, it all made for a great night.

I thought the behind-the-head guitar battle was really fun to watch.

Zakk did a wonderful tribute to Ozzy Osbourne towards the end of the set.

Before BLS, Zakk came out early with Zakk Sabbath to jam some of Black Sabbath's best songs.

Once again, my expectations for Zakk Sabbath were blown out of the water, they sounded incredible.

I'm glad they played my favorite Sabbath song, N.I.B.

Dark Chapel kicked the night off, and they were a lot of fun too.

Dark Chapel is Dario Lorina of BLS's new band, and they're a very bluesy hard rock band. I recommend giving them a listen.

Last night was yet another night to remember full of metal at the coolest church on Earth.

Upon A Burning Body were absolutely incredible live. They brought out a ton of energy at the end of the night and played a killer setlist.

Traitors, Carcosa, Swollen Teeth, and Exocarnage (a local band from the Pittsburgh area) all opened the show and did a fantastic job at doing so. Everyone I met from those bands were also incredibly nice and were willing to help me identify songs I wasn't familiar with on the setlist (I make Spotify playlists of every show I see).

Overall, it was one of those shows that made me go "man, I love heavy metal."

NEW PODCAST ALERT

I just dropped a new episode of the GOT RIFF? podcast, and for this one I got to the bottom of how much Crowbar has blown up recently. As it turns out, there may be more to it than just memes.

If you want to listen, so far it's only on YouTube and Spotify, but I am working on getting it on more platforms.

I'd appreciate if you gave the episode a listen, and subbed to the YouTube, which is also @gotriffmedia .

Last night was a HEAVY serving of thrash metal (with a bit of hardcore sprinkled in too).

Exodus were nothing short of incredible. They sounded really good and had some of the highest energy I have ever felt from a metal band, and that includes the crowd too.

Havok were also insanely good. They also sounded great and played some of my favorite tracks from them, like Phantom Force and the newly released Death Is An Illusion.

The other two support acts, Candy and Dead Heat, were also quite fun to watch. I wasn't as familiar with them, but I will definitely be adding some of their songs to my playlists.

What a show to close out my 2024 concert series with.

Last night was one for the ages.

Iron Maiden were amazing. They played extremely well, and their sound quality was nothing short of incredible. I also loved the setlist, as they mostly played songs from Somewhere In Time (one of my favorite Maiden albums) and Senjutsu. They did play songs from their other albums too, like The Prisoner and Can I Play With Madness. The stage production was insanely good too, as you can see, with Eddie even coming out during Heaven Can Wait and Iron Maiden.

The Hu was their opener, and despite what my blurry photos might look like, they were great. I had seen them once before with Five Finger Death Punch, but this time was much better since they played longer and I knew most of the songs (except for the ones that I don't think are released yet).

Overall, I had a blast and checked another classic metal band off the bucket list of bands to see live.

Last night was the final show of the summer for me, and I don't think it could have been much better than this one.

Slipknot was top-notch, as per usual. This was my fourth time seeing them, and it was quite possibly the best and most unique. Since this is the 25th anniversary tour, they only played songs from the self-titled album. Not every song from the album was played, but I'm fine with that, because it was awesome to hear deep cuts like No Life and Scissors live.

Knocked Loose were great too. They're just as heavy live as they are in the studio, and I loved that. Their energy was amazing.

Orbit Culture was also incredible, though a 30 minute slot as an opener doesn't do their music justice. They still sounded great, but I just wanted more since they're one of my favorite modern metal bands.

Last night was yet another rock show, with kind of a strange lineup, but it somehow worked really well.

Five Finger Death Punch were absolutely amazing, just like when I saw them almost two years ago. They did play some different songs this time, so the setlist was still a lot of fun. They're also easily one of the best sounding live bands I've seen yet, up there with Ghost and Lamb of God.

Marilyn Manson was actually really good. This was his first show back since 2020, so it's been a while since we've had a live performance due to all of the issues everyone already knows about by this point. Regardless, his voice sounded strong and it was a pleasant surprise seeing Reba from Code Orange playing guitar for his band.

Slaughter To Prevail were awesome as well. I knew Alex Terrible was one of the strongest voices in deathcore today, and this show proved that. My only complaint was that their set was a bit short. I wish they could have played a few more songs, but it's not a big deal at all. I'm still glad I got to see them.

The Funeral Portrait were the first band, and they were solid as well. I didn't really know anything about them before this show, but they sounded good, and their music reminded me of bands like My Chemical Romance and The Warning, so I'm gonna have to check them out.

Last night I witnessed a pretty monumental tour, the Ashes of Leviathan tour, celebrating the 20th anniversary of two of the best metal albums of the 2000s.

This was my fourth time seeing Lamb of God, and this time was by far the best, aside from the pouring rain and the pit getting too crazy to stay up front. This was also the most unique time I've seen them, since they played their album Ashes of The Wake in full, except for Another Nail In Your Coffin. They sounded amazing, making them still one of the best live bands in metal in my opinion.

Mastodon were incredible. This was my first time seeing them, and they played Leviathan in full as well. Their sound was also insanely good, and I loved their stage design and the Cysquatch coming out during the encore where they played some songs from their other albums.

Kerry King was outstanding. Who would have thought that current and former members of Slayer, Death Angel, Machine Head, and Hellyeah would make for an awesome supergroup? Me, of course.

This was my second time seeing Malevolence, and they were great yet again. I still feel like they're one of the most underrated modern metal bands, and I can't wait to hear some new music from them.

Last night was yet another excellent rock show for me.

Godsmack put on yet another incredible performance. They still sounded amazing, and their setlist had a few changes from when I saw them last year, like playing Keep Away and their cover of Come Together.

Nothing More was also absolutely amazing. I was supposed to see them last year with Godsmack and Staind, but they dropped off that tour unfortunately, so it was great to finally see them. Their setlist was also great, playing some of my favorites of theirs like House On Sand and Tired of Winning/Ships In The Night.

Flat Black was a great opener. They sounded amazing as well, and did an awesome rendition of Burn MF by Five Finger Death Punch. Their original music is awesome too if you're into hard rock that borders on metal like I do.
