The Return to Life of an Original Junior Reformer In 2022, The Pilates Source® received a donation of an original Junior Reformer from the Allan Family, who’s father was not only a student of Joseph Pilates but also a Contrology teacher himself. For decades, it was stored in their basement- and though the original springs were rusting and dirt was accumulating on the surface, the reformer itself was in good condition. We estimate that this Junior Reformer was built on Joe’s Berkshires property in the late 1950s-early 1960s, and its just incredible that its now back on the same plot of land, inside Sean Gallagher’s Pilates Museum. A full circle, pilates history moment! To restore this Junior Reformer, it took a little cleaning. The original upholstery was still in fair condition, as was the hardware. We kept the original springs, which are very different from standard reformer springs, and even kept the original tape around the cylinder shoulder blocks even though its yellowed with time. Its these details that tell us a story of Joe’s intentions, designs, and favored materials. The shoulder block crossbar was missing from this piece, so we made a new one ourselves based on original photos of what it looked like and how Joe designed it. Its been a joy to share this archival apparatus with teachers from around the world in Sean’s Pilates Museum, at Pilates at The Pillow®, and at Rhinebeck Pilates in our signature Junior Reformer workshop! You’ll also see that we took it on a road trip to NYC, for a photoshoot inside Joe’s original studio at 939 8th avenue- and demonstrated on it in the same place (in front of the big windows overlooking 8th ave) where Joe kept the floor model of his junior reformer in the studio. The Return to Life of The Original Bednasium Video timeline from 2018-2023: showing the restoration and the many teachers from around the world who have come to try it for themselves. When Sean Gallagher purchase Joe and Clara’s original Berkshires property, to his amazement he discovered four original Bednasiums on the premises. To this day, those Bednasiums are the only four known to still be in existence. In 2018 and with the help of Holly Quaglia Wells, we began the restoration process of the Bednasiums. We scrubbed, polished, and tightened. We assembled, found suitable mattresses, and outfitted the headboards with springs that Sean had replicated from originals in his archives. Our goal was to have the Bednasium ready to be used by attendees of the first Pilates at The Pillow®, which was in September 2018. We met our goal- the first original Bednasium experience since Joe was alive took place on the very property where he himself once slept on it and used it. In fact, we ended up surpassing our original goal. The Bednasium has since become a main attraction at Pilates at The Pillow, and is displayed inside Sean Gallagher’s Pilates Museum/Studio. We learned so much about Bednasium history throughout the restoration process that we were able to present a full 1.5 hour webinar on the history of the Bednasium this past summer, full of primary source, historically factual information. Most recently, we even had the honor to present a workshop centered around it at our most recent Pilates at The Pillow- using the original Bednasium for demonstration. What a joy it is to share this physical, mental, and spiritual history with the pilates community- both in person and virtually. The Return to Life of an Original Wooden Cadillac Over the part couple years with the help other dedicated pilates teachers, we conducted a labor of love: to bring this original wooden Cadillac to full restoration so that it may be used once again. When Sean Gallagher purchased this Cadillac (with many other pieces of original apparatus) along with Joe and Clara’s Berkshires estate, the equipment was in disrepair and in need of major TLC. Over course of 4 summers, we gathered to clean the wood, the hardware, and the vintage vinyl, taking care to maintain the aged patina. Fortunately, the original upholstery was in good condition with no rips or major blemishes so all it need was a good toothbrush cleaning! We sourced replica hardware that was missing to complete the structure. The hardware for the Cadillac wasn’t quite as hard to find as it was for the clawfoot reformer, but it was specific and we were sure to use fittings that were according to what Joe Pilates specifically chose to work with. It was a beautiful moment when we lifted the upright poles of the apparatus and it stood- once again- inside Joe’s original studio in the Berkshires! Since then, pilates teachers from around the world have come to gather, learn, and try this restored Cadillac for themselves- the oldest known wooden Cadillac to be open and accessible by appointment in these ways. A huge thank you to Sean Gallagher for his pilates museum/studio where this fantastic artifact is kept, as well as the teachers who have joined us over the past few years to take part in this historic preservation. Pilates at The Pillow® Incredible Moments… The Guided Tour of Joe’s original property and studio, with the chance to use his original equipment One of the greatest highlights for us during Pilates at The Pillow is to give the guided tour of Joe’s original property and studio. This year it was very rainy during the tour, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise! It gave us all the chance to gather together as a group inside the studio and for everyone to marvel over, discuss, photograph, video, and take turns trying out the wide array of original and vintage equipment that is part of Sean Gallagher’s Pilates Museum/Studio. Also due to the rain, we took several original pieces to Jacob’s Pillow to give attendees more opportunities to experience it! What an incredible time we all had! I personally videotaped and took some of the photos over the weekend and it was so deeply satisfying to watch the excitement, awe, and honoring of Joe and his original work. Archival pilates Headdresses in the Jacob’s Pillow Tea Garden- a historical pilates tradition that lives on! Its always so fun to bring the Headdresses out to the Tea Garden during Pilates at The Pillow®! This is the same place that Joe and his students documented the use of this unique apparatus so many decades ago, and we are fortunate to have the opportunity to also practice here with replica apparatus today! Like all Contrology exercises and apparatus, this is all really harder than it looks! We had great fun trying to first find balance, and then be playful with it. We had a fabulous workshop at Rhinebeck Pilates on Monday- The Pilates Archival Junior Reformer™! Thank you to everyone who joined us and who participated in practicing these rare variations that Joe Pilates originally documented on the Junior Reformer! One of the best parts was giving everyone the opportunity to try each exercise on both the original junior reformer as well as the universal reformers. Its this type of first-hand experience that really enhances knowledge and understanding of the work, and allows us to make informed choices of what variations of exercises to give our students! And…. We’re super excited to announce that we will be teaching a new, weekly virtual class on Mondays from 5-5:45pm EST- “The Original Junior Reformer”! This class will teach you how to do the Junior reformer workout on your own studio reformer. I first started teaching this virtual class in 2020 and now, 3 years later, its back! We are thrilled to be able to, once again, bring this material to teachers around the world.
