Another Wednesday, another drop-in!

We held in-class auditions for our students to decide who would represent us at the VTA Improvathon next week! We are excited for this troupes first public performance. Enjoy some clips from our auditions (blind freeze) and some from our post-audition slacker. (@virginiatheatreassociation conference is still open for registration on their website btw!)

Come play and learn with us tonight 6-8pm! (and every Wednesday this month) drop in fee is only $10, and helps support the coaches, with the primary goal of using the funds to cover application and travel costs for future improv festivals. 👀❄️🎤 Register here:

We are SO back! Our Theatre & Film students are getting ready for the VTA festival this month, so we’re bringing back our drop-in Wednesdays. Come play with us!

We believe that improv is for EVERYONE, so these sessions are open to all high school students and adults, not just GSA students. The registration form helps us know what to anticipate, (which is important for security.) The $10 fee helps support the coaches, with the primary goal of using the funds to cover application and travel costs for future improv festivals.

Reach out to Cristina Rose here, by DM, or by email cristina.shafarman@gsarts.net with any questions.

NEON Artist Spotlight: Alan Jelercic
“Have Heart” 2016
The result of a wheatpaste workshop led by artist Alan Jelercic and The Governor’s School for the Arts, the collaborative temporary mural Have Heart was the work of Lisa Beckman, Heather Bryant, Elizabeth Cooke, Kyler Davis, Alex Drewry, Caitlin Edwards, Devyn Hoshour, Jeannine Owens, Jesse Scaccia, Will Sprueill and Heather Thurston. The participants created many small drawings that formed one cohesive image that was then wheatpasted to the side of a then-vacant building in Magazine Lane.

As if going to two high schools isn’t enough! These hardworking Governor’s School for the Arts Musical Theatre students are also finding time to rehearse for Disney’s FROZEN.

We caught up with them at rehearsal, and we can’t wait to see them on stage October 9–11!

This week at @govschool2 , I had one of the greatest opportunities to take a photo and get a signature with the composer of the opera Edmonia!

Dr. William “Bill” Banfield! He taught me about intonation and how we should think about the notes before we sing to get that next note while we are singing.

I had two auditions this week and I had the opportunity to sing a gospel song, “My Times” by @officiallashun in front of him. Not knowing that he saw my 1st audition videos.

He saw me playing the piano and he recognized the jazz tune that I was trying to play… 🙂‍↕️🥲
It was “Four” by Miles Davis. He said “We’ll talk…” right before he left.

I will see you again, Dr. William “Bill” Banfield, in January!

Kierra touched my shoulder! My shirt said in the back, “Dear person behind me… need prayer? Tap my shoulder.” Y’all didn’t catch that!
