No floor....but 'plan B get curtains' is fulfilled. Just three of them to hem this week, once we locate the sewing machine. This one luckily was spot on length wise.

One step forward, approximately seventeen steps back. It’s been a week, and we’ve sadly found ourselves somewhat behind where we’d hoped to be.

The plumber made a start on the living and dining room floors, priming where needed, prepping the substrate to suit @wunda_group install and getting most of the boards down. He followed the instructions, even doing the recommended walk over the boards to help them stick.Turns out, the boards had other plans.

After some investigation, the suspected culprit is a slight camber in the boards. They’re sticking around the edges but popping up in the middle whenever you walk on them. Not ideal when you’re trying to create a nice, solid floor to tile onto.

So, this week we have spent time scraping, prising and breaking the boards back off the floor. A full day’s work, essentially undoing the work he did earlier in the week.

Then, just to add insult to injury, we rang Wunda to check that replacement boards and more adhesive were on their way, only to discover that nobody had actually logged the request.

The plan was to be tiling next week. We don't even have an installed underfloor heating system yet. And, of course, we have a finite window to get the tiles laid while we're off work. The following week, our eldest has a general anaesthetic for an MRI, #ElNiño #winter is looming, and we still have no heating.Thank goodness for the fire.

Today has therefore been about salvaging whatever we can, getting everything lined up for next week and ringing around everyone involved to make absolutely sure the right materials actually arrive this time. Belt, braces and probably a hard hat at this point.Meanwhile, we've activated #PlanB: windows and curtains.

The curtains in the main bathroom have always been pretty poor and rather thin. We wouldn't ordinarily put curtains in a bathroom, but the room is huge enough to carry them off. We're sticking with the same #colour but upgrading the quality.

This time, we're going off-the-shelf rather than repeating our previous made-to-measure experience. @johnlewis . Luckily we managed to complete the set from off the shelf versions of the same material just in time before being discontinued

Bespoke bench pad and back cushions made for this gorgeous handcrafted bench by @rawlinsoninnes

Upholstered in a stunning tonal flatweave rusty orange G Plan fabric @gplandesign , finished with contrasting black velour piping and copper toothed zippers, for that extra bit of detail. Love how these colours and textures work together! ✨

Tea, two sugars and a whole lot of determination.

The courtyard wall is FINISHED! And what a relief it is.

The guys worked around the rain, fuelled by tea and two sugars, carefully dismantling and rebuilding the wall almost entirely from its original blocks. Just three were casualties of the process, with new blocks used below ground and the old ones given a second life above.

We even managed to improve the original design, incorporating piers to strengthen the wall while staying true to the original drawings. Any little undulations are simply the character of 50-year-old blocks that have been taken down and put back together again. We'll call it patina.

The biggest relief? The tree had pushed the footing up slightly, but thankfully hadn't cracked it. No new footing required, saving us a whole extra world of digging, time and expense.

An incredible effort from the guys, who have done a brilliant job in some pretty miserable conditions.

One less thing falling apart on our little mid-century house. And one step closer to bringing it back to life.

Our retro dining room tour!

This house is so different from our last one - @highviewbangor - and we absolutely love it in all its sixties glory. It was built in 1969 and in this room the floors are original along with the wooden glass screen although sadly some of these things may have to change slightly when we renovate. But don’t worry we’ll be staying grounded in the midcentury modern vibes for sure.

These orange chairs made the biggest difference to the room and are so so comfy and are defo one of my greatest ever vintage finds. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe - Brno chairs were the search keywords if you’re interested.

BTW I meant to mention the Orla Gilkeson @orla.gilkeson.art overpaintings - they’re with the wooden St Lucia artwork now.

We’ve exchanged. Now it’s time to pack.

Soon we’ll be leaving our Edwardian home and moving into something completely different — a 1971 architect-designed single-storey house, untouched for more than 50 years.

From high ceilings, period details and vertical family life...to flat roofs, long lines and modernist thinking.

Two very different kinds of architecture.
Two very different chapters of family life.

We’ve always loved old buildings and the stories they carry.

And while packing up this house feels like closing one chapter, it’s also the start of something we’ve dreamed about for a long time.

A house with history.
A house with potential.
A house we can carefully shape into a home for the next generation.

So now it begins: boxes, chaos, three little boys, and an aventure waiting on the other side.

Next stop: Single Storey House.

Sleep well, house.

One last night before moving day.

Tomorrow we say goodbye to the Edwardian home where all three of our boys know as home and hello to a very different adventure in a 1971 single-storey modernist house.

See you tomorrow.

One of the questions we keep getting is: what’s the plan?

And the honest answer is… we’re going to live in it first.

It’s tempting to arrive with a full set of drawings and a fixed vision. But houses have a way of telling you what they need once you’re actually living in them.

How the light moves.

Which spaces naturally draw you in.

Where family life gathers.

What works — and what quickly doesn’t.

So for now, the plan is to move in, settle, and let the house reveal itself a little more before making the bigger decisions.

That said, there are a few essentials that can’t wait.

The electrics need updating, some systems need recommissioning, and there’s the practical work of bringing a 1971 house back into everyday use after standing still for so long.

The glamorous part of renovation? Not quite.
But it’s the important part.

Before the big design moves, there’s the careful work of making the house safe, functional and ready for its next chapter.

Then we’ll start shaping it, one decision at a time.

One piece of advice that’s going to stay with us came from @kevin.mccloud1 :

Three kids. One night away. Zero sleep. And a weekend spent elbow-deep in a collectable toilet. Just another glamorous chapter in the renovation of our 1971 bungalow.

We drove home from Somerset with three sleeping children, having barely slept ourselves. Teething, a change of scenery and our youngest still recovering from hand, foot and mouth have made for a rough few days. The rest of us had it over the summer, so hopefully we’ve built up some immunity!

Home, kids to bed, and straight back to DIY.

Most of the Wunda boards are now down in the living and dining rooms, but naturally, it hasn't gone entirely to plan. Despite prepping the original mosaics to help them bond, the boards haven't fully adhered and crackle when you walk on them. Even our test tile hasn't solved it. So that's another problem to figure out before we can move forward. Our trusty plumber has been amazing working on Sunday to push it all forward.

And then we have the toilet. Oh, the toilet.

An original Adamsez pan we'd really like to save, attached to a porcelain soil pipe with what appears to be the entire contents of a silicone sealant aisle. The floor bolts were seized, breaking it out wasn't an option, and we've spent a frankly unreasonable amount of time elbow-deep in 1971's finest plumbing.

We're trying to preserve the character of this house, but at this point, the house is testing our commitment to the cause.

Mid-century modern glamour. With a side of sewage.

Send help. And possibly a plumber.

(P.s. we succeeded with the pan. This sexy loo with live another day and go back in once the floor level is raised up with the new tiles. Saving some pennies on spending a penny.

One last look before we say goodbye. 💔

55 years of footsteps, family life and history, all captured in these tiny 2mm mosaics.

Originally made by a French manufacturer (whose name, frustratingly, we can no longer remember! *Amendment - @emauxdebriare 1971), they were laid directly onto the concrete slab in 1971, using large, paper-backed sheets.

We've always loved their colour, texture and the way they belong so completely to this house. But beneath them lies a cracked slab and a failed electric underfloor heating system that costs a fortune to run.

As much as we'd love to keep them, sometimes renovating an old house means making difficult decisions.

So here's one final look at a little piece of 1971, before we cover them up for good.
