(Not) In My Back Yard
Home is a complex term in architecture - simultaneously grounding us in place while extending across time and memory. This project harnesses this paradox — utilising its blend of familiarity and estrangement as a tool to challenge issues in housing such as monotony, alienation, and emotional disconnection.

GRACE BAKER Y4 | 23/24 ‘For Peats Sake’

Finland is facing the catastrophic effects of climate change due to mass deforestation and the harmful burning of peat. This project challenges how peat production at the scale of an architecture might contribute to the active restoration of the surrounding landscape, proposing an education centre alongside a private enhanced mineral weathering lab, the architecture stands in limbo; speeding up peat production, it waits, and hopefully supresses, a climatic disaster.

Decommissioning Fear in a Post Nuclear Truth. Architecture BSc, project 2 Year 3 2021. Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. United Kingdom.

by Grace Baker @grace.baker.architecture

Plants live through man-made catastrophes without formulating speech; their adaptation wholly material observable through their extensions. The quest for nuclear power exacerbates plants photosynthetic physiological process. Both of these natural principles literally “treat” solar light. While the splitting processes of nuclear physics produces light with matter, the processes of photosynthesis incorporates light through materiality and yet plants achieve this with minimal impact to their surroundings. The proposal looks to decommission fears of past disasters with the aim of acceptance of future green technologies; weaving a narrative of suggestions regarding a more harmonised sustainable truth by drawing connections between the cyclic principles of photosynthesis and the linear process of nuclear production.

The bi-products of nuclear fission are now being utilised within medicinal gene therapies, with trials taking place for the treatment of Asthma. As a means of questioning and exposing the invisible threats remaining in both, our external environment and the increasingly mechanised manipulation of the internal body, the proposal is an Asthma COPD Overlap Syndrome Gene Therapy Lab and Treatment Center sited on the edge of The River Thames in Pimlico, looking out to the previously decommissioned Battersea Power Station.
