“Risk has a lot of different meanings right now,” Jawole Zollar says, including the risk of being unapologetic about what the [Urban Bush Women] company puts onstage and pushing contemporary dance toward a physicality that reflects the stories being told. Dive into the meaning behind the works featured in THIS IS RISK. ➡️ #Dance #LiveMusic #Percussion #UnapologeticStorytelling #TheUBWway CONTEMPLATIONS ON LEGACY — highlights the power of our diversity. It is important for everyone to enthusiastically be their true selves. Our individual experiences and histories matter and are valid. Not everyone has to look or be the same, as our diversity defines our collective brilliance and power to build blueprints for the next generation to learn from and follow, guided by our ancestors. Contemplations on Legacy is a work by choreographer and longtime UBW collaborator Vincent E. Thomas. SHELTER — explores contemporary and historical relationships of people affected by displacement from homelessness to the middle passage to today’s events of forced migration due to climate change, political violence, and economic despair. “Shelter” is an adaptation of “Heat,” an evening-length work that received its world premiere at Montpellier Danse ‘88, France, and its U.S. premiere at The Kitchen in New York City, September 1988. The opening text of Shelter is reimagined from time to time to reflect the current challenges of forced displacement. This work is performed with live percussion and vocalist. BATTY MOVES — “Batty” (pronounced Baa-ty) is a word used in the Caribbean meaning buttocks. This dance was created to honor a woman named Sarah Baartman, also known as the Hottentot Venus. Baartman was taken from her home in South Africa in the early 1800s to be exhibited nude as a sideshow attraction in Europe because she was thought by some Europeans to have an unusually large behind. She was 21 years old. Batty Moves is ultimately a celebration about seeing beauty in all the different shapes, sizes and shades we come in. On September 22nd, 1988, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar’s “Shelter” had its U.S. premiere at The Kitchen inside the evening-length work titled “Heat.” “I moved to New York City from Tallahassee, FL in 1980. The sheer numbers of those who were living on the streets, many African American, angered me. The themes of displacement and dislocation became the central point of investigation for “Shelter,” created in 1988. “Shelter” explores the contemporary and the historical relationship of people affected by displacement... I have remounted “Shelter,” dedicated to those affected by natural and unnatural disasters, systemic poverty, and inadequate government response.” — Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Founding Artistic Director This truth-telling work returns to the stage Saturday, October 17th at @tennesseepac. Celebrate the U.S. premiere with 20% off tickets until Wednesday, September 23rd, 10 PM CT with code SHELTER. #ItCanHappenToYOU #ThoughtProvokingArt #ArtForTheMasses Photo credits: (1 + 5) Stephen Cohen Photography; (2) Cylla Von Teidemann; (3-4) Kirk Richard Smith (2) #UBWArchive - Urban Bush Women in Shelter. We’re grateful to BAC donor Glenn E. Martin and actor Gbenga Akinnagbe for bringing together friends and colleagues for an intimate gathering in support of our work. Guests heard from Executive Director Elz Cuya Jones and activist Yusuf Dahl about the power of art and storytelling to create meaningful change, with a special performance by artist Grace Galu Kalambay. As BAC enters its next chapter, gatherings like these remind us that this work has always been powered by community, and that means you. ✨ Help us continue building toward the next 10 years. Make a gift to BAC today at bwayadvocacycoalition.org/donate.

Around 9 years ago I was in Amsterdam on a layover and I went to one of my fav spots the 420 Cafe. I had gone there many times to hang with John Sinclair, the great and late poet, activist, jazz scholar, radio host and countercultural advocate. Spending time with him helped me to feel closer to my pops and to the culture I was raised in as I was living in the Uk at the time. So there I am Surrounded by Frank Zappa posters and clouds of smoke and I see Martin Lee, an old friend of my father’s. He had interviewed my pops for his first book Acid Dreams, about the history of acid. I was amazed to bump into him and he shared with me about his most recent book Smoke Signals. That moment was the catalyst for the creation of what is now @plantofthepeople ! I am very excited to welcome Martin to join us at @joespub as we develop new material and continue to grow the show towards a major run in NYC!

This week, I opened my home in Sugar Hill for an incredible evening in support of the @bwayadvocacycoalition — and together, we raised nearly $15,000. I’m grateful to everyone who came, gave generously, and helped make the evening special. A special thank you to @gbengaakinnagbe Akinnagbe for lending his voice to the cause, and to the incredibly talented @graceface_killah for sharing her gift with us. Broadway Advocacy Coalition is doing important work at the intersection of art, culture, advocacy, and social change. I was proud to open my home and bring people together to support that work. Nearly $15,000 raised in one evening, because people believe in the power of community. Stay tuned for the next fundraiser, for another great organization. Photos by @nehagautam_photography
