Just published: an interview with Spencer Doran of Visible Cloaks, whose new album ‘Paradessence’ feels like a trip to an alien planet that nonetheless sounds just like our own.

I recently caught the duo performing live here in San Francisco at @grayareaorg , and soon after, I spoke with Doran to learn about the development of their live set, their truly otherworldly visual accompaniment produced with British artist @gradeeterna , and how they craft their ‘more human than human’ tonality.

In the second half of our conversation we pivot to video games—specifically the 2023 game ‘Season’, a game about field recording (!!) where Doran was the audio director and composer. There are some fascinating nitty-gritty tidbits about designing lifelike audio environments and how the generative tools used in game audio have informed Visible Cloaks’ own music.

As always, the full read is available at: certainsound.net

Thanks for reading!

“i find these tools most exciting when they fail to accurately capture something, overextending their capabilities into a speculative space greatly abstracted from the real”

a long, lush look at @visiblecloaks’ music video for “thinking / shapes,” featuring @yoshioojima and @satsukishibano, crafted with uk-based photogrammetrist @gradeeterna ⟁⟁⟁

alternating between two methods of 3d scanning, visible cloaks and grade eterna captured visual information from physical environments to generate digital representations. then, they utilized their virtual camera to navigate past the edges of these generated models, entering the reflective, labyrinthian territory beyond boundaries. as they (and we) explore this decayed, impressionistic periphery, slivers of the piece’s text float, delicately superimposed in french, japanese, and english

the full video is available now, drifting in the ether for your viewing experience. visible cloaks’ new album paradessence arrives may 22, and is available to pre-order now 모

an extended glimpse of @visiblecloaks’ video for “disque,” created in collaboration with uk-based photogrammetrist @gradeeterna ⿻⿻⿻

harnessing 3d scanning technology, visible cloaks and grade eterna transformed the physical environment of a london greenhouse into a virtual model within game engine software. then, through an interplay of randomized camera paths and modulated effects, countless generated perspectives of the space gently unfurl synchronously with the sonic architecture. the full video is out in the ether now, ready for your viewing / listening enjoyment 🪞

this past weekend, vc played two @ageofreflections shows in portland and seattle, featuring extra-special support from @omarijazz and @salolimusic. if you were there to seem, we are envious! if not, we’ll all have an opp, with more live dates to appear in support of paradessence in the sometime future 🤫

𝘚𝘌𝘕𝘛𝘐𝘌𝘕𝘛 𝘉𝘓𝘖𝘖𝘔 ~ As we get ready to host Visible Cloaks (@visiblecloaks) in Portland and Seattle this weekend, what an honor it is to help introduce “Disque,” the shimmering lead single from their new LP on @rvngintl, Paradessence.

“Our approach to making music as Visible Cloaks has always been more ‘bottom up’ than ‘top down,”” says Spencer Doran. “I never have a specific vision of a completed song which we’re trying to enact as faithfully as possible in the studio, it is more setting up various conditions in which ideas emerge. I conceptualize pieces like ‘Disque’ with this kind of vision in mind, creating a series of unfolding abstractions from an initial source using various stochastic techniques we have developed over the years of our musical practice.”

Visible Cloaks join us Friday and Saturdays to debut music from Paradessence live in quadraphonic sound & immersive light, with support from Omari Jazz and Saloli.

At 6pm this Thursday in NYC I’ll be doing a Q&A at @artechouse about the making of Currents alongside screening the installation.

Here are some vids of the VFX sequence made possible by maestros @gradeeterna and @luigihonorat. Motion capture at @onassis.onx with @kevinpeterhe, movement by @_mioishikawa, choreography by @amy.j.gardner

I’ll also have a Vision Pro headset to preview the Immersive cut for anyone interested :)

Currents is now being exhibited as an immersive installation at @artechouse as part of the SUBMERGE group show! Adapting this VR project for their 270-degree, 18K immersive gallery was quite the task. While watching Currents in 2D is a fundamentally different experience, seeing it projected on such a massive canvas—collectively experienced for the first time—was truly epic.

Major thanks to @n.mohl._r for helping bring this project to life as an immersive installation, and to @jaredrosenthal for the magic grade (and for putting up with me camping out in his office at ungodly hours.) The animation sequence brought to life by wizards @gradeeterna and @luigihonorat really shines at this scale✨

Huge thanks to the @artechouse team for this opportunity. It’s an honor to be shown alongside such talented artists who are redefining digital art space. If you’re in NYC, come experience it firsthand :)
