It's 12am and I'm armed with a broomstick and a head lamp to go pollinate DURIAN FLOWERS 🧹🌼

Fruit bats, insects, & bees usually do this job, but in order to increase successful pollination and harvest yield, the agronomists have opted for a "home remedy" in the meantime. As we speak, the agronomists are building new bee hives to increase their population, and it now makes me curious on how durian flower honey tastes...

Durian farming is extremely tedious and time consuming, but this tender care and love is what the king of fruits needs 😬

Designer Durians were once just a wild "Kampong" Tree 🌳

Every notable Durian species actually stems from one original mother tree, and at the time, this tree was classified as a "Kampong Tree," aka a wild tree. By cloning this exact tree through grafting, their fruits have been replicated and commercialized, thus leading to more notable variations, ie Musang King, Black Thorn, D23, etc.

You may ask... "why not just plant the seed from a designer durian?" Although it may be that simple, the seeds from designer durian may lack in a few characteristics that may make it a successful tree. For example, the seed of a Musang King is very small and flat, which means the stored energy in this seed is minimal, which makes this a weak sapling thus leading to a weak tree. On the other hand, Kampong Seeds are very large and strong, which makes them a great base tree that can supply nutrition to the grafting process of the designer durian.

Furthermore, since Durian seeds take 8 years to fruit... you can think that every "Kampong Seed" is a mystery box ... and you won't know the flavor until it matures.

The craft of Durian cultivation is extremely tedious and requires long term dedication... and the demand of this fruit is only ever so rising.
