This past year it was a great honor to have Peter Halley read the manuscript for my first book, which I co-authored with the philosopher, Dr. Grant Vetter. I know Dr. Vetter felt the same sense of gratitude for Peter’s time, especially since he was flying between exhibitions while reviewing our work. We have both admired Peter’s aesthetic and theoretical commitments since we were art students, so to get to be in dialogue with one of the giants of Neo-Geo, Simulationism, or the members of the “Hot Four” when they first broke through in the 80s to great fanfare and international recognition, was nothing short of a dream come true. Dr. Vetter has always claimed my figures lived in Halley’s world of cells and conduits, and as time goes on I’m apt to agree. I could never thank Peter enough for his contributions to how I think about critical art production, or for an endorsement like this one for my first book — “Informed by a broad spectrum of philosophers and cultural theorists, Bower and Vetter take us on a supercharged tour of a post-human trans-human multi-dimensional future driven by the destabilizing forces of biotechnology, AI, and informatics – a future that’s being constructed by a range of actors from secular-humanists, agnostic-cyborgists, atheist-automationists, schizo-bio-punks, and animist-hacktivists to traditionalist super-humanists and pragmatic bio-conservatives. Be prepared for a wild ride.” - Peter Halley. Thank You @peterhalleystudio and we’ll be sending a copy along as soon as it rolls off the press. 🙏🏻#peterhalley @grant.vetter

In the FREE PUBLIC TALK I’ll be doing THIS COMING SATURDAY at 7pm (Pacific Standard time), which will be live on IG on the @carnationcontemporary stories page for those who want to listen in from outside the state, I will be covering what the transition from the Rhizomatic Politics of Gen X and the Xennials to the Habitational politics of Millenials, Alphas, and Betas means in our cultural moment, why Co-Habitational aesthetics has superseded Relational Aesthetics as a paradigm in contemporary art practice, and what the role of Somatics, Lichenanalysis, Panoanalysis, Spatio-Pragmatics, and Micro-Lichen Politics means in the work of Pamela Hadley as well as how an integral world view can heal many of the problems that we all face today - together! That’s a way of saying we’re going to cover as much material as we can in an hour and dance the night away while contributing to a good cause at @pirc_oregon The talk is open and Free to the public, no money is required, although a 20 dollar donation is suggested, and make sure to bring your ID if you plan to have a drink and party into the night with me, Pamela @nosleeptillinstall and all of the great people at @carnationcontemporary 😊 RSVP today at https://pamelahadley.com/ (it helps us to plan for seats, snacks, and refreshments — and is free!) hope to see you this Saturday, Jan 24th at 7pm!

HOLDING ME, HOLDING YOU Pamela Hadley Jan. 10 — Feb. 01, 2026 Opening Reception Saturday, Jan. 10, 5–8 PM Hours: Sat–Sun, 12–5 PM & by appointment (Portland, OR) Join us for Pamela Hadley’s Holding Me, Holding You, an immersive installation featuring abstract projection-mapped animation and sound compositions that open paths to new futures through ecology, relational aesthetics, and the phenomenological. Slowness is not just a method; it is a core strategy of Hadley’s practice—a deliberate act of healing from and resistance against a culture that often reduces the value of human life to what one produces while prioritizing rapid consumption and immediate outcomes. Facilitated here by perceptual experience, slowness and stillness invite reflection and connection and create space to imagine the ways in which we will remake our world. Visitors are ushered into the darkness by small light works before discovering the full-room installation that is the focal point of this show. There, they will navigate the space, each other, and, if they remain still for long enough, perhaps the sequestered locales within their own inner landscape. PROGRAM SCHEDULE Saturday, Jan. 24th 7:00 pm A conversation with Dr. Grant Vetter @grant.vetter - “From Rhizomatic to Lichen Politics: Habitation as a form of Revolutionary-Becoming in the work of Pamela Hadley” 8:30 pm Community Dance Party Create some joy together! OPENING SATURADY - HOLDING ME, HOLDING YOU Pamela Hadley Jan. 10 — Feb. 01, 2026 Opening Saturday, Jan. 10, 5–8 PM
Hours: Sat–Sun, 12–5 PM & by appointment EXHIBITION STATEMENT For me, slowness is not just a method; it is a core strategy of my practice—a deliberate act of healing from and resisting a culture that often reduces the value of human life to what one produces, while prioritizing rapid consumption and immediate outcomes. Inherently anti-capitalist, slowness and stillness, facilitated here by perceptual experience, invite reflection and connection and create space to imagine ways in which we will remake our world.  Growing at a remarkably slow pace and acting as essential reservoirs of nutrients, lichens significantly enrich forest ecosystems. A significant portion of lichen species, especially those dependent on older trees, is linked to ecological continuity, which is lost when forests burn too intensely or are logged without proper restoration, affecting continental and global ecosystems that these ancient woods sustain. Robin Wall Kimmerer tells us that lichens, “blur the definition of what it means to be an individual, as a lichen is not one being, but two: a fungus and an alga… Some pairs are so specialized that they cannot live apart from one another… In a world of scarcity, interconnection and mutual aid become critical for survival. So say the lichens.” Such joining of two organisms may seem far-fetched, but it could not be closer to home. Recent biological research has revived a 1967 theory long overlooked: that multicellular life began not with a single-celled organism dividing, but with the union of two. In 2012, a team of biologists further developed this perspective in their essay, “A Symbiotic View of Life: We Have Never Been Individuals.” Their conclusion is striking—“We are all lichens.”
