Reindeer, Arctic foxes, walrus, and polar bears (not seen on this trip). About as close as you can get to the North Pole on skis.

Hard to beat a week of sunny pow at Sunrise!

I was invited by @shanecrobinson of @graybirdguiding to join a week-long hut trip at @goldenalpineholidays Sunrise Lodge in the Selkirks of BCa few weeks ago to tag along with him and @trevorkostanich as an apprentice guide. Holy cow are these guys good at what they do - I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to learn from both of them and keep developing my toolbox!

The trip was enhanced by the company kept at the hut - all wonderful people who I look forward to crossing paths with again in the future. Skiing powder is amazing, and it is even better when shared with stoked folks!

Special thanks to @matthewtpatterson for some fantastic work behind the camera - these are all his amazing photos and I did my best to not ruin them through cropping on Instagram!

And if you made it this far, you get to learn that this was a fantastic way to emphatically end my season. What I thought was a (mostly) minor tweak of my left knee on day one of this trip turned out to be a complete ACL tear that will require surgery this summer. Whoops!

@shanecrobinson is the guide who helped start my backcountry skiing (splitboarding) journey. He taught my first AIARE course back in 2018, and I’ve been working with him as a guide and mentor ever since.

Shane is an incredibly generous teacher and friend, and it’s wild to think of how many experiences I’ve had in the mountains as a direct result of my time with him: from hut trips in Canada to slurping ramen in Hokkaido to having photos published in Ski Journal.

As someone who loves to ski the best snow, I’ve been blown away at Shane’s ability to help balance both (1) having a great time in the mountains with (2) helping people develop towards their outdoor goals, whether that’s as athletes, aspiring guides, or industry professionals.

If you’re looking for a guide or a mentor in the backcountry skiing space, I can’t recommend @graybirdguiding and @shanecrobinson enough. Thanks for another awesome time up north; I’m already looking forward to next year ⛷️

@trevorkostanich is unique because he’s a guide with as much emotional intelligence as he has love for being in the mountains.

Trevor and I have skied more days together than I can remember at this point, and we joke that we always have great conditions (when we’re not in America). As a guide I’ve worked with for years, I so appreciate his ability to match stoke and high energy with a patient, teaching-oriented approach. And, from a photography standpoint, it’s fun to have guides and athletes you’ve shot with a bunch who both move well in the mountains and put themselves in great situations for photos. Trevor is one of those athletes, and he makes shooting in the mountains fun (and incredibly easy).

If you’re looking for a ski guide in the Snoqualmie Pass area (and beyond), I can’t recommend him enough!

As an amateur button presser, I have immense respect for people like @barwick_photo, who have spent their careers in the world of photography. It’s a wild way to make a living, and the people that have done that successfully have to be both incredibly talented and smart and work their asses off.

But what might be less obvious to those that don’t know Tom, and what struck me throughout the trip, is that the guy is a heck of an athlete. He just looks good skiing. And he’s a monster on the uphills. On more than one occasion, I was happy to be the lazy guy (classic splitboarder) at the back of the group letting Tom and one of our guides pack down the skin track. Seemingly always at the front of the group on our climbs, it was so fun to watch Tom rip on the downhills all week. And, like a classic photographer, I also got to watch him get uncomfortable every once in a while about being on the “wrong side” of the camera.

This was my first time out with Tom, and I’m already looking forward to more days out with him in the future. What a great human

“There’s more to life than being really, really, really ridiculously good looking, you guys,” he told us. And then he snapped his action cam onto his helmet and skied away. Wilson was our group’s heartthrob. Part model, part chiropractor, 100% good time.

We initially met a few years ago on a ski photography trip that ended with me catching a ride to the hospital in a search and rescue helicopter, so it was fun to link up again for a week in the mountains under better circumstances. Wilson is an incredibly good dude, and you can probably even talk him into giving you a quick adjustment in between ski days back at the hut 😉

Every hut trip seems to have a comedian, and ours was Ryan: the guy who brings his Sapporo beers in a special edition Godzilla x PBR box. The guy who makes his own hats: “Future Hydenburg Winner.” The guy who says you can’t use the party ski video you just shot because his “vents were open” and his “dongle was out.”

Ryan and I bonded over our shared love of Albanesr gummy bears, the Canadian cultural phenomenon of candlestick bowling, and our shared love of the Canadian “donger.” Though this was Ryan’s first time on a hut trip, we all have no doubt that he’ll be back for more.
