Yesterday, I had the honor of attending the 5th Annual Queens Ball, an evening that celebrated community, service, and the extraordinary legacy of Rev. Dr. Floyd H. Flake and Rev. Dr. M. Elaine Flake.

For nearly five decades, the Flake legacy has been woven into the very fabric of Southeast Queens. Through the Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral, its nonprofit initiatives, and the Greater Allen Development Corporation, their vision extended far beyond the walls of the church. Their work helped create senior housing and services, the Allen Women’s Resource Center, schools, community programs, affordable housing, and countless opportunities designed to strengthen families and neighborhoods.

You simply cannot travel throughout Southeast Queens without seeing evidence of that impact. But one part of their legacy that has always resonated deeply with me is homeownership. Whether through Allen’s housing initiatives or Rev. Floyd Flake standing in the pulpit Sunday after Sunday for decades preaching the power of ownership, economic empowerment, and building something for the next generation, the message was clear: our communities become stronger when our families have a stake in them.

Buildings can be counted. Homes can be counted. Programs can be counted. But how do you truly measure the generations of families whose lives were changed because someone had the vision to invest in a community and then spent decades doing the work?

One of the most powerful moments of the evening came during Rev. Al Sharpton’s remarks. His message was a reminder that it is easy to stand on the sidelines and judge the work of others, but very different to dedicate your life to actually doing the work.

Over four decades of service. Over four decades of building. Over four decades of creating opportunities and leaving a visible footprint throughout Southeast Queens.

Love you Rev. Floyd Flake & Rev. Elaine Flake — your legacy speaks for itself. ❤️

Honored to join The Queens Ball Gala for its 5th Anniversary, celebrating “A Legacy of Excellence: Honoring Our Roots, Expanding Our Reach.”

It was especially meaningful to celebrate the legacy and vision of Rev. Dr. Floyd H. Flake and Rev. Dr. Elaine M. Flake, whose decades of ministry and community development have helped create opportunities in housing, education, senior services, and beyond.

Legacy is not just what you leave behind. It is what you build that allows others to move forward.

Tonight we honored the roots, celebrated those continuing the work, and reminded ourselves that there is still more ground to cover and more people to reach.

Day 297 of 1,000 | 1000 Days to Build a Birth Center Campaign

Today, I was given permission to completely let go of my past.

The things that tried to break me and even the things that still exist in my present no longer have power over me. God has prepared a seat for me at the table, and now it's time to eat.

This season is about walking boldly in purpose, not looking back at pain. Every lesson, every setback, every tear has prepared me for what's next.

A special shoutout to Bishop Newman for continually pouring into my spiritual growth and reminding me of who God has called me to be.

There are no cages in the Kingdom. It's only up from here. 🙏🏾✨

297 days down, 706 to go. 💛

Day 186 of 1,000 | 1000 Days to Build a Birth Center Campaign

Easter egg hunt, Book Buddies, and Bridge filled up our Saturday in the best way. The joy of being in community was truly felt.

Pastor Green kicked off the Easter egg hunt by reminding attendees of the reason for the season, the egg as a symbol of new life.

And that message stayed with us. We look forward to being a representation of something new in maternal health, something rooted in community, care, and new beginnings. 💛

PS. We got to see two returning book buddies from our last year reading. What a difference a year makes !

186 days down, 814 to go. 💛

Day 166 of 1,000 | 1000 Days to Build a Birth Center Campaign

Habakkuk 2:2-4

[2] And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.

[3] For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.

[4] Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.

This vision is not mine alone. I have quietly prayed and asked God for direction on how we can save our families and help them thrive. God gave me birth centers and I am being obedient to my purpose. He gave me the vision and now it is a 501 c(3) organization on a 1000 day journey to open the first birth center in Queens, NY. There is nothing too big for God.

This is a a year recap of faith in action.

166 days down, 834 to go. 💛
