What a summer!!! For those of you that don’t know, I spent the summer in NYC working with an amazing organization called @greenbronxmachine

At the beginning of this year I started emailing them through their website so see if they would be willing to let me come out to learn more about what they do and how and even though it felt like a long shot at the time, now I know Stephen and Lizette to be some of the most supportive and willing to help people that I have ever met. They took a chance on me and welcomed me with open arms, so there’s your sign to reach out and try to collaborate with someone, if you don’t ask you’ll never know 😉

To sum up a little of what GBM does, they established a curriculum full of project-based learning where students learn science, math, reading, writing, and more through the practice of gardening. What a concept! Learning is not only fun and engaging, but it also helps facilitate conversations about what eating for your health actually looks like. And more than that, it makes eating vegetables fun! If you grow it, you own it, and nobody says ‘ew gross’ to a veggie they nurtured and watched grow from seed to harvest. If you’re like me I’m sure you can imagine the plethora of benefits this offers and the countless problems that this addresses. I could go on but I guess I should save it for my thesis 😅

If you’re looking for an organization to support (Stephen has an inspiring book about the making of GBM, and some totally awesome swag) or if you’re one of my teacher friends who’s interested in trying something different in your classroom, feel free to reach out! I will forever and always be looking to Green Bronx Machine as an example of what people can accomplish when we work together, willing to try and fail, with the goal of learning and enjoying the process of learning. So for real, if this struck a cord for you, ask me how you can get involved, and if nothing else, always remember, SI, SE PUEDE! 🥳🧀

This week we spoke to Bronx educator @stephenritz who is on a mission to build healthy, equitable, and resilient communities through inspired education, local food systems, and 21st Century workforce development. Stephen discusses how he developed an incredibly successful indoor gardening curriculum in the Bronx that allows children to grow vegetables in the classroom, helping them eat better, be more engaged with school, and providing inner city kids with pathways for jobs in agriculture.
