This year the CPRE - Campaign for Protection of Rural England launched their Centenary National Awards as part of celebrating their centenary year.

Back in June Bourne Green, Hook Norton, our community housing project was nominated, and today we’re very pleased to announce that we’ve been shortlisted in the Best Housing Solution category!

Despite a number of large scale housing estates springing up around the village, Bourne Green came about as a result of conversations amongst the people of Hook Norton, and the need for affordable homes that could have a positive impact on the environment and the local community.

A housing solution that this rural community could fully support and be involved in, and that could provide affordable and sustainable housing for those in need, and with a strong local connection. It has a privilege to work on the community consultation and design of this project.

Our founder Charlie talks about the community housing project in the village he lives and works in, which attempts to address the housing concerns facing many rural communities. The surprising reason to how it came about, especially given the amount of housing already being built, and the decision to approach the project in a holistic and sustainable way.

The construction sector is under growing pressure to deliver better-performing, lower-impact buildings - yet achieving this relies on more than client decisions alone. Contractors, developers, architects, and engineers all play a crucial role in shaping what gets built and how.

At Abingdon & Witney College, they are exploring new ways to support the industry through practical workshops focused on low carbon and resource efficient construction. As part of this, they want to understand the level of interest and identify the skills and knowledge that would be most valuable on the ground.

We’re putting the message out there to those who want to help bring high quality, cost effective, approaches into the mainstream - reducing waste, reusing materials, and applying circular principles on site to deliver practical, affordable, low-impact solutions.

In partnership with @Greencore Homes, @Agile Homes, and @EBUKI, the college are developing a potential upskilling programme. To help build a strong case for funding, they’re keen to hear from developers and contractors looking to stay ahead of regulation and deliver higher-quality outcomes.

The programme would focus on creating homes that are more energy-efficient, cheaper to run, and healthier to live in, aligned with Future Homes Standards. It would also support small teams in developing in-house expertise that can be shared across organisations.

Potential topics include:
• Retrofit: fabric-first upgrades, improving existing buildings, and whole-house approaches
• Low carbon materials: timber, hemp, and earth
• Building performance: airtightness and moisture management
• Business: green finance and sustainable procurement

The college are exploring flexible delivery formats (e.g. 36–70 hours every 3 months) to make learning compatible with live projects.

We have recently revisited the community housing project here in Hook Norton. The residents are making their houses in to homes and taking ownership of the development.

The homes came about through consultation with the people of the village. Like many others, ours has been subject to several new housing developments. The consultation showed that including the local community in the provision of housing would greatly improve the quality and sustainability of the housing, along with their connection to it.

The project consists of twelve dwellings centred around a shared garden. It includes a community building, accessible at all times with a flexible working space and therapy rooms, available to all the residents of the village.
