Through our Reset Tourism Fund, we’re proud to support @greenprogram (TGP), a public benefit corporation redefining what sustainability education abroad can look like.

Founded in 2009 by @me1issalee (who also sits on our Board of Directors) TGP offers short-term, experiential programs that give students, young professionals, and now corporate partners the chance to engage with sustainability issues firsthand: installing rural microgrids in Nepal, studying renewable energy innovation on Iceland’s glaciers, restoring coral reefs in Belize, and exploring climate finance through their newest program series in Jakarta. Each experience pairs cultural immersion with hands-on learning and participants consistently describe it as transformative and life-changing.

Along the way, TGP has earned recognition including Forbes 30 Under 30, a Top 3 Student-Founded Company by the New York Stock Exchange, and a finalist spot in the @unwto Global Rural Tourism Competition, among many others.

Our investment through the Reset Tourism Fund helped TGP build internal capacity with a dedicated marketing team, invest in new technology, and deepen training for program guides, all in service of programs that reflect the highest standard of responsible, community-centered travel. TGP is now bringing that same model to corporations and organizations, expanding its reach as it grows the next generation of climate-conscious leaders.

It’s a full-circle partnership we’re so proud to be part of and we can’t wait to see where Melissa and her team take it next!

Welcome back, students!

We are thrilled to start this semester by bringing back Climate Career Connections.

During this monthly HEAT Call, we will be joined by Melissa Lee, Founder & CEO of @greenprogram.

A bit about our guest: Starting The GREEN Program from her college dorm room at the age of 19, Melissa Lee turned her curiosity about the world into a mission to make global sustainability education more accessible, immersive, and impactful. Today, she inspires students to see the world as their classroom, curating transformative, short-term international experiences that explore today's most pressing challenges in sustainable development while empowering participants to become globally minded leaders.

Melissa's work champions sustainable development, responsible travel, and experiential education, helping future leaders connect what they learn in the classroom with real-world challenges, and the people and communities creating innovative solutions. She believes that curiosity, combined with purpose and real-world learning, has the power to shape impactful careers, strengthen communities, and drive meaningful change.

We invite you to join us this Wednesday, Aug. 19 at 8 p.m. ET. Visit HigherEd in Community for the link or visit cclusa.org/climateconnections.

Climate Career Connections will be hosted every other month starting in August.

See you soon!

On Day 4 of the Regenerative Career Retreat, we descended into an entirely new climate - more of a tropical paradise! We stopped by a beautiful, family-run regenerative farm, run by the matriarch of the family, Julia. Her son Miguel gave us a full tour of the farm, sharing the medicinal and health properties of each plant grown on the farm. We got to sample almost everything: raw cacao, sugarcane, oranges, papayuela (mountain paw paw), limes, tamarillo (tree tomato), and so much more.

Here is the group tasting raw cacao. Here, you can see it in its form as a fruit. It has a hard shell on the outside, and when cracked open, the fruit inside is sweet and tart, with a large seed within each pod.

Here, Miguel is cutting us Starfruit and sharing the medicinal benefits of each plan on the farm.

We love starfruit!!

After the farm tour, we sat down and got to work learning how to roast fresh cacao beans. After roasting the cacao beans over an open flame in a clay pot, we had to break apart the cacao shell from the inner piece by hand, and then had to grind it down. We got to taste 100% raw cacao as part of this process - it was bitter but also really delicious!

On Day 3 of the Regenerative Career Retreat, we joined Kunti & Gonzalo for a beautiful sound healing and cacao ceremony in the Sacred Valley of Peru.

Here is Kunti pouring the cacao into our mugs.

All 10 amazing participants on this retreat are here to build a better world, but just like all of us, are battling their own fears and uncertainties as they chart new paths for themselves. That’s why we integrated this healing ceremony as a way to allow people to experience the healing benefits of cacao, reflect on their lives, their dreams, and their visions for a better world. The cacao ceremony allowed all of us to sit with the discomfort and comfort of a new dream, and begin to process from within our bodies of letting go / calling in this new vision for our lives.

The amazing Kunti taught us about the healing powers of cacao, and the amazing Gonzalo led us through a 2-hour sound bath where he played many different instruments from around the world and from ancient civilizations.

On Day 2 of the Regenerative Career Retreat, we explored the Sacred Valley of Peru with a visit to an incredible regenerative, community-based farm.

We started our day with Parque de La Papa, also known as Potato Park, to learn more about how 6 indigenous communities cooperatively preserve 1,300 potato varieties and operate self-sufficiently. We were joined by Professor Oscar Ortega who explained the history of this community and how they came to be. Once we entered the park, we were greeted with traditional music and dance as a way to meet various community members.

Inside, we learned about the incredible ecology, structure, and landscape of this park. This community came together 20 years ago in realization that they could do more together, rather than as separate communities. When they joined, they decided their focus would be to preserve the 1,300 varieties of potatoes and NOT to sell or trade them. With this intentionality, they also received support from a larger NGO to help them structure their community, finance, skills, and knowledge-sharing within their own ecosystem. Now, they are fully self-sufficient.

Given that Parque de la Papa sits at 10,000 ft in altitude, they have various microclimates in which they can experiment with sustainable food systems and food growth. Another amazing thing is that while this community preserves 1,300 varieties of potatoes, each potato has it’s own purpose: some are for consumption, some are for medicine, some are for fertilizer, and some are for currency (yes, currency!)

One of my favorite parts of this tour was learning about the indigenous way of life, also known as “Sumac Kausay”. In this beautiful venn diagram, they showed us how their lives are built in balance around: the environment, the community, and the mountains. The center of this is “sumac Kausay” or, a harmonious life. We got to see this described in a venn diagram, but also got to see it as a living, breathing demonstration of harmony as they taught us about the way they grow their food, raise their families, built cooperative systems, and sustain themselves.
