200+ riders lined up for the @nueraceseries SM100k. 161 finished. I was one of them 🔥 60+ miles of backcountry mountain biking 🤘🏽

I tried to complete this race in 2024 on the “hard” course and I DNF’d 😭 My ego was bruised … it took me 2 years to muster the fitness and courage to line up again … I got lucky with the 2026 OG course. People say it’s “easier” but 😵‍💫😎😂

In the days leading up to the race, my Hammerhead broke and I was on the receiving end of a cold, a TRO, 2 PI’s, plus I got my period … but ya know what … I adjusted my plan and visualized success 🤓 A thunderstorm wasn’t gonna stop me !!!

Marathon MTB made possible by:
@shesendsfoundation - thank you for sending me off with a Full Send grant and letting this auntie live out her MTB dreamz
@cpt_leeann - for all the custom sessions in the gym 🤗
@britty27 - for not giving up on me after those DNF’s 🥲
@velofitpt - for helping me with my footsie when nobody else would 🫶🏽
@gregoryvanthomas - for riding w/me every Sunday, complaining minimally this time around, and making sure my @ridecannondale was perfect on event day … you owe me an ultralight tube!!

It’s kinda chic to think about all the on and off bike training I’ve done over the last 2+ years. There’ve been weeks of tending to injuries and illness, a lot of fatigue, and I’ve had some weird bike issues too …

💫 But it’s all going according to plan because this was part of the plan 💫

Anyway - yesterday I went on my longest mountain bike ride EVER - by time and distance. I felt pretty good for the first 50 miles and then my head got really hot 🥵 in Seneca Creek bc there was zero air movement and I almost had a mental episode in Schaeffer. I pulled through, only crashed once, and didn’t fall in any horse poo.

OK, so this is really a Sand MX-5 appreciation post 🤎

Our third consecutive appearance at the Loudoun 1725 Gravel Grinder and our first time without rain 😎 The biggest thank you to @ex2adventures, Andy Bacon, his crew, and all of the volunteers who put together this beautiful event on the gravel roads in Northern Virginia.

We enjoyed every mile of the 40 and 60 mile routes, and the Philomont water crossing was lower than in previous years. Send it with your eyes closed, kids 🙈

Bikes + friends 💜 That’s all.

Entering my ✨ SM44 ✨ era in typical Sheila-fashion … sleeping in, riding 🪨 , hanging with @gregoryvanthomas, and eating vegan cake!

This year, the annual birthday trip (B2) was a little different cuz @beckie.auyeah & @madison_t_blake joined and we celebrated 3 birthdays … that tripled the amount of shredding and nearly everyone pulled a back muscle!

I won’t say anything here about how badly I want an e-MTB 🤐

And for those wondering, SM44 is like LH44 but sans Kim K. Unlike Kim, I passed the bar on the first try - what, like it’s hard? 💁🏽‍♀️

“I may never make it to B3, but I always make it to B2” - Sheilz, on her favorite weekend of the year 💜

Wishing everyone a great weekend ☀️ especially these two goofballs who are attending B2 - Bikes & Birthdays - at Cacapon State Park 🤩

We caught up with them before their trip and this is what they had to say about B2:

Sheilz: ‘It’s ultra exclusive … I’ll be celebrating 44 years on earth by riding Thunderstruck 44 times’

Greg: ‘I can’t believe I’m turning 50 😭 … A FRAME!’

In sum, please join us in wishing Sheila and Greg a happy birthday weekend 🎉🎊🎈🎁🎂

This weekend, Club Melanin Base Miles escaped the DMV hustle & bustle for a little quiet time in Frederick, MD 🧘🏽

We stayed at the @basecampfrederick Lodge & Cabin on Hamburg and Mountaindale Roads, respectively, and had ourselves a ‘gravel getaway’ that included steep gravel climbs, rocky gravel descents, a road ride to see covered bridges, and *many* boxes of tacos 🌮

Our newly designed club kit (from @rz_designs) arrived just in time to make a debut on the groad and we couldn’t be happier with this fresh look. Pactimo Custom always under-promises and over-delivers on custom-branded cycling apparel 🤩

As Melanin Base Miles approaches its 5-year anniversary, it’s nice to reflect on what has changed but also what hasn’t. Our leadership team and our primary sponsors/partners remain the same 😎 🍀 🦆

📍This event and all rides took place on ancestral Piscataway lands

Some pics from the Stokesville 60/40 Lifestyle Trail Ride, mostly so the internets can see the difference between my creek-crossing-face 😐 and Greg’s 😛.

This was my 3rd time ‘racing’ the 60/40 and my 1st time on the ‘old course.’ I like this event as my SZN OPNR 🙌🏽 You can register the week of the race and know exactly what to expect. The riding at Stokesville is neither mid nor going south !!

I was a little depleted after my ride and accidentally took a non-drive side photo of Kelly and I’s Scalpels 😪 Out of caution, I immediately bought a new bike. Can’t take no chances 😁

When’s the next fun ride?!

@waterfordclassic 2025 ✅ My last gravel event of the season! 🥰

Started the morning at a crisp 40°, but things warmed up quick once the pedals started turning. Couldn’t have asked for a better crew 💜MBM athletes and coaches out in full force, and @scottcatanzaro our @ridecannondale rep joined the fun too.

Loudoun County delivered! Peak fall colors, 🍁🍂 rolling climbs 🚵🏾 and fast descents 🚴🏾‍♂️💨

Finally got to put the Topstone Lab71 w/ Lefty and Hollowgram wheelset through its paces 😤 Climbs like a Billy goat and descends like a fighter jet dive bombing its target. 💥

2025 was a good year on the gravel bike. Full of grit, growth, and great memories. Looking forward to more @melaninbasemiles adventures in the new year BUT NOW 🚴🏾‍♂️💨 Virtual training is now in EFFECT!

Tandem POV 👀 Yesterday someone remarked that the tandem has ‘twice the power & twice the fun” and Greg and I decided that it’s actually “twice the weight.” Fast on the flats, furious on the downhills, Tokyo drifting in the corners, and locked in on the climbs. Rigid 29er Tandem (affectionally known as 2 Chainz) was a good pick for @waterfordclassic. We’re thinking of riding @velopigs Oink @ the Moon 🐷 🌕 night ride on the tandem 🔦 before signing up for MonsterCross and the Lifetime Grand Prix. Y U NO SEND IT! @ridecannondale #cannondale #vintagecannondale #cannondaletandem #ridecannondale #tandem #tandembike
