Story time - my first art sale, and how it’s inspired me to buy art myself. I’ve told this story before and I’ll keep retelling it, because it’s important.
.
When I was 13, I entered a regional art show in BC. This isn’t the one - I don’t have a photo - but it’s my work from the same time period. I used to bring my pencil crayons along with me on my babysitting gigs, and worked on art after I put the kids to bed. It didn’t win, but I was thrilled to find out that a stranger wanted to buy it.
.
That first sale gave me confidence to invest in myself and buy my first set of pro grade paints. I tried acrylic painting for the first time, selling my next few paintings in the same year. I later found out that the buyer was a famous Canadian artist, an acclaimed sculptor featured in National Geographic. She bought art from me - an eighth grader - for her home.
.
Even though I didn’t know this at the time, her gesture had a huge impact on my journey as an artist, and it’s inspired me to invest in other people’s talent as well. Swipe to see some of the art that I’ve bought or traded for from other artists that I admire over the years. They’re all seasoned artists and have supported me in different ways.
