Home Alive: The Art of Self Defense is much more than a compilation album. Released 30 years ago in 1996, it grew out of the work of Home Alive, the Seattle organisation founded following the 1993 murder of Mia Zapata of The Gits. Created by Valerie Agnew, Zoe Bermet, Gretta Harley, Julie Hasse, Lara Kidoguchi, Jessica Lawless, Mich Levy, Cristien Storm, and Stacey Wescott, Home Alive was dedicated to providing affordable self-defence classes and raising awareness about violence against women, ensuring that something positive could emerge from an unimaginable tragedy.

What makes this album so special isn’t just the music, it’s the reason it exists. Artists including Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, The Gits, 7 Year Bitch, The Posies, The Presidents of the United States of America, Joan Jett & Evil Stig, Ann & Nancy Wilson, Kathleen Hanna, Jello Biafra, and many others donated tracks in support of a cause that mattered deeply to them. The album is a remarkable example of the solidarity shown by Seattle’s music community, with so many artists coming together to honour Mia’s memory while helping others.

The music is outstanding, but it’s the sense of community, compassion and purpose behind this album that stays with me the most. Home Alive: The Art of Self Defense is a lasting reminder of how people can come together to honour a friend while helping others, creating a legacy that reaches far beyond the music itself.

If you’re interested in the story behind the album and the organisation, I also recommend the documentary Rock, Rage & Self Defense: An Oral History of Seattle’s Home Alive. It’s available to watch for free on YouTube: https://youtu.be/IPemvIkUHIw.
