Fast feet. Heavy brakes. Explosive power. ⚡️👇
If you want to own the field, straight-line speed isn’t enough. You have to be able to change directions on a dime, control your body, and re-accelerate before the defender even reacts.
Enter: The Multi-Directional Shuffle-Accel-Decel Drill 🏃💨
How to Run It (20 Yards Total)
1. Lateral Shuffle ➔ Fire out into a sharp lateral shuffle.
2. Accelerate ➔ Plant, drive out, and burst forward into a sprint.
3. Decelerate ➔ Drop your hips, break down your feet, and absorb the force.
4. Repeat ➔ Instantly transition back into a shuffle, drive into your second acceleration, and stick the final decel.
What It Works
Change of Direction (COD) Mechanics: Forces your body to transfer force horizontally and linearly in seconds.
Eccentric Muscle Strength: Teaches your quads, hamstrings, and glutes to absorb heavy impact when braking.
Core & Hip Stability: Keeps your center of mass low and stable through rapid transitions.
How It Helps Athletes
Prevents Injury: Strong deceleration mechanics reduce the risk of non-contact ACL and ankle injuries.
Creates Separation: Games aren’t played in a straight line. The faster you can stop and re-accelerate, the easier it is to shake defenders or close gaps.
Improves Kinetic Efficiency: Teaches your body to stop wasting energy during multi-directional movements.

Lane Andrews – Founder & Chief Instructor
Lane Andrews is the Founder and Chief Instructor of South Tampa Jiu-Jitsu (STJJ) and was Robson Moura's first Jiu-Jitsu black belt in the state of Florida.
At 18 years old, after getting his first job, he immediately enrolled in Tae Kwon Do and began his lifelong martial arts journey.
After several years of Tae Kwon Do, Lane transitioned into kickboxing, compiling an impressive 21-4-1 record and captured the PKC National Championship.
In 1994, after watching the very first UFC event, Lane realized that he needed to learn Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu. He began training BJJ and soon became one of the early pioneers of mixed martial arts in the United States.
During the mid-to-late 90s, Lane competed professionally in MMA, earning a 12-4-1 record. His career included fighting in the International Vale Tudo Championship in Brazil and Pancrase in Japan, two of the world's premier organizations during the early days of MMA.
As a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitor, Lane has challenged himself at the highest levels, earning a bronze medal at the IBJJF Masters World Championship, a silver medal at the IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship, and numerous additional tournament medals throughout his competitive career.
Outside of martial arts, Lane earned his MBA from the University of Florida, combining his passion for teaching with strong business leadership.
Today, Lane owns and operates South Tampa Jiu-Jitsu, one of the Tampa Bay area's premier martial arts academies. He is passionate about helping students of all ages build confidence, discipline, and resilience through martial arts. Lane and his wife, Sheryce Andrews, M.D., have four children. When he isn't teaching or training, he enjoys coaching youth flag football and spending time with his family.

Deceleration turns into acceleration real fast. ⚡️
The Jump Cut Reaction Drill isn’t just about foot speed—it’s about force absorption, body control, and making split-second decisions under momentum.
If you pre-determine your cut, you lose your edge on the field. This drill forces athletes to drop their center of mass, plant off the outside edge, and react instantly to a visual cue without bleeding speed.
Key Coaching Cues:
Absorb first, explode second: Load the hips, don’t just reach with the foot.
Low & athletic: Keep your chest over your toes during the plant phase.
Eyes up: React to the stimulus—don’t guess the direction.
Push the ground away: Drive out of the break with intent on that first step.
Add this to your next agility block to turn deceleration into dynamic multi-directional power. 💥

Record Month. Incredible Team. Amazing Community.

July was the biggest month in the history of South Tampa Jiu-Jitsu.

While I’m incredibly proud of the results, I’m most proud of how we got here.

STJJ staff showed up every day, worked hard, supported one another, and stayed focused on what matters most, our students.

To every coach, front desk team member, and instructor: thank you. Your professionalism, positivity, and commitment are the reason our academy continues to grow.

And to our students and families, thank you for trusting us with your training. Your support means everything, and we’re committed to continuing to earn it every single day.

This record month isn’t the finish line, it’s another step toward building the best martial arts academy and community we possibly can.

Here’s to an even stronger August. 🥋❤️
