The Art of Autumn Dressing 🍂🍁🍂

If pushed, we would say that autumn is the most rewarding season when it comes to dressing well. As the days become cooler and the landscape takes on a different character entirely, you have the perfect opportunity to bring a little character and texture into your wardrobe.

It is the season for careful layering, heavier fabrics and richer colours. Wool jackets, textured knitwear, smart coats and, of course, silk accessories all have their part to play. But autumn dressing doesn’t have to mean reaching automatically for browns, greys and navy blues. One of the easiest ways to build a more interesting wardrobe is to get adventurous with colour. The secret is not necessarily to wear more colour, but to combine it in thoughtful or unexpected ways.

Some people pack a pillow or hair straighteners on holiday.

I’ve just taken my Series One.

Lots to share about it, but suffice to say, I’ve done many things with motor cars in my career; road tripping to Skye, the Porsche Museum and the Targa Florio in 911s; in or around probably every significant Land Rover from HUE to CSK No.1, In Lode Lane in the 90s to prototype drives with the New Defender.

This week’s trip with one of my sons and both my Land Rovers eclipses all that by an off-road country mile.

I’ll share the full story in @land_rover_monthly, but it stemmed after interviewing @hagerty CEO McKeel Hagerty in lockdown for T911. He takes his 911S to drive roads he specifically wants to drive that car on. What better way for me to celebrate a decade of raising a spanner to restore my Series One, than to take it back to the Lake District, to drive it around the places involved in the car’s life: the house I collected it plus the private forest it worked In until 1996 near Ambleside. The trip became much more than that as you’ll read in LRM.

For now, enjoy a shot of the rig. My Range Rover Classic was the ideal tow car and a spectacle in itself. It took me an hour on the M6 to realise people weren’t struggling to overtake: they were slowing to look.

For now, enjoy the rolling roadshow I took to Cumbria and back.

Someone said to me, you look happier and more fun in your 60s.

A full decade ago this week: the first proper day working on my Series One.

Here, with my great friend and colleague Ed Evans, working up top whilst I crank the engine by hand. Everything was as free as when it parked up, amazingly.

Ed and I got to within half an hour of it firing up: we checked it was free, had compression and a spark, and jury rigged fuel. We just ran out of time that day.

A great day and the start of the process of getting it back on the road.

I’m very lucky and grateful to have it, the help I had to it to where it is today - and to have a real ‘keeper’ car. More so, such an analogue machine. As Land Rover dreams go, restoring a Series One is the one we’d all wish for. I’m very grateful.

Incredible to think I shot the car in 1999, right as I was starting my career. Next month, it might be going ‘home’ again.
