AGING WELL.

We started this initiative because both my parents retired recently in their 70s. Only to realize how lucky my family is because of their independence.

As kids we can only feel proud and grateful, as they are enjoying their retirement!

While some of us and our parents might have prioritised other things, now is never too late if our hearts are willing!

Definitely not what it was but still there.

To all my friends in our 30s and 40s, let’s not forget mobility.

It is what will allow us to move the way our bodies were designed to.

Yes, strength is very impressive and it shows, but it’s useless if you struggle to get up from the floor.

Yes, running is the new kid on the block, but skinny isn’t going to help us carry ourselves in our 60s and beyond.

Mobility is flexibility with a tint of strength to get us into end ranges.

CUT THROUGH THE NOISE: EP2

Unhealthy obsession with RESULTS instead of the JOURNEY.

Have we forgotten why any one of us started working out in the first place?

For the same reasons we put kids through sports or when our parents started us in some form of physical activity, it was to begin the journey of learning a new sport, to be physically fit, to learn values, soft skills, to be part of a community.

Most of us don’t pick up a sport or fitness thinking of results, podium, PBs or recognition.

Those came later. When the love of the process, of learning, of being disciplined and with some good fortune, we discover our talent, that’s when we explore the idea of competition.

Even so, it is a journey started.

The obsession of results, in my opinion has led us on a road to look for hacks, short cuts, or buying equipment to get an edge.

After decades of training, what kept me going at my age is the love of challenging myself. To discover new ideas, new pain points as my body changes over the years.

From pushing my body in my 20s, without realising I was riding on youth to recover and perform.

In my 40s, it has pivoted to being efficient in my training while balancing career, family and recovery so I get to train for more years.

The damage we do to our bodies are not immediate. It usually takes years for problems to show.

National athletes have shelf lives. There is a window of peak physical capacity. Hence, we need any edge we can get. Before that, it was about learning the process of being great. Showing up, prioritising rest over social life amongst others.

Fitness should be something we started to enhance our quality of life into our later years.

Fitness events and races are great opportunities to motivate ourselves in this very long journey.

While we pursue that, let’s not forget why we started in the first place :)

Stay tune to episode 3!

Share, like, comment if you like this kind of content. Topics that you would like to hear about are also welcome.

Shoutout to my talented friend @dingx._ for assisting in this series.

Some numbers are there to distract you from what’s important or hard to teach.

Telling you done 500 sessions in the same gym, builds community and loyalty. Not necessarily fitness.

That extra 100 calories that you consciously tried to burn in a workout by doing extra reps, will come back with 1 bite of the “wrong” food.

Walking 10k steps but doing nothing else, isn’t a game changer.

The weight on the scale isn’t telling the full story.

You lifted a PB. It looks like progression, yes. But what are you doing in your daily life with this PB?

Think more deeply. Not saying I am right, it’s just my perspective. Not a fact. You can disagree.
