What happens if we create spaces where we can learn, support local businesses, eat good food and kick it with great people?

This is intentional community building…

What do YOU see……………🎨

That’s the beauty of art. We can stand in front of the same piece and walk away seeing something completely different.

Week 4 of 6 of Luxury Hospitality Unplugged took us to The Be Lounge Art Exhibition in West Baltimore, where my friend and brother of 20+ years, @venroyjuly , did much more than open his doors.

Venroy opened his story. He shared candidly about the vision, the struggles that shaped him, the lessons learned along the way, and what he is building for the future. His journey became part of our lesson and a living example of what it means to see possibility before everyone else can see it.

West Baltimore to the world.

Our lesson: The Art of Seeing: Hospitality Begins With Vision.

📖 “Write the vision and make it plain…”
Habakkuk 2:2

Great artists see possibility.
Great leaders see potential.
Christ challenges us to see people differently.

Vision gives direction. Hospitality gives vision a place to live.

Grateful for Venroy, his vulnerability, his vision, and another powerful night of faith, art, hospitality and fellowship. So Thankful for this group and the small groups platform at @weareunionchurch to advance the Kingdom and grow community while finding our people along the way!

We want to invite you all to our next monthly happy hour which we will be hosting at @avenuekitchenbar on September 24th from 5-9p

These happy hours we started 13 years ago because we didn’t know where to find the other black professionals in the city, so it’s always been about building community. Now 13 years later we know we are here but the need is just as strong.

This is exactly when we have to lean in to community.

First we gotta build the relationships and then we work together, so it’s never just been about grabbing drinks.

So with that come through and network with some other dope people.

NEW EPISODE ALERT 🚨 : VENROY JULY HAS ARRIVED!! (@venroyjuly)

What a pleasure it was to interview such a well respected individual like Venroy July. His incredible story of coming to America from St. Catherine and overcoming the odds to not only getting into one of the best high schools in the NY tri-state area but also receiving one one of the most prestigious scholarships in the country to UNC Chapel Hill. Venroy is a testament to those who defy expectation.

This guy has been at the highest levels of so many areas; it’s inspiring to watch. From wrestling championships, to high level law firms, to boxing championships, to even challenging the incumbent for City Council in his district. For more on his story go watch our exclusive interview today on YOUTUBE! (Link in bio).🔻🚀🔻

I was invited to a documentary screening in DC yesterday. The documentary, titled Diminished Returns, described how through the use of eminent domain and justifications such as highway construction predominantly black communities were destroyed and what has emerged over years are these affluent mostly white communities. Did you know that Chevy Chase had a sizable black community that was basically destroyed. To be honest at first I really wasn’t in the mood to hear another version of this story which has been repeated over and over again in different cities, but it’s hard not to recognize the importance of what we’re trying to build with the @grnwdrow let’s not forget that we are just a few blocks away from the Highway to Nowhere, which using the same justification destroyed a predominantly black community. What we are building pays homage to all those communities and tries to reimagine the possibility of these communities. It’s been hard, tiring and expensive, but important. We’re going to lean into that history!

If I woulda told you 10, even 5 years ago that we would have an art gallery in West Baltimore on W. Baltimore Street, and that we would do it without getting any institutional capital, or any real subsidy or any help from our politicians, most wouldn’t have thought it possible. Now we’re hosting blind whiskey tastings, podcasts, and infused tea and candle making classes with more to come. Improving communities is not easy but it’s possible.

So another hard part about doing this type of work, like really at the community level, is that you really just gotta try ish and see if it works. Businesses aren’t beating down the door to open brick & mortars, especially on corridors that haven’t been invested in in years…at least not the type of businesses that I envision, so you work backwards. How do you help to build foot traffic to make that area more attractive to businesses. You just gotta take the financial risk and then hope you can find the right operators to bring the vision to life. We’ve built the art gallery, that seems to work, now we are building a juice bar, and a co-working space because if we want to have healthy communities, we gotta have amenities, and healthy food/juice options and opportunities for entrepreneurs to learn and grow. This is all trial and error…but on my Kevin Costner ish #fieldofdreams #buildittheywillcome.

Man, this is how this part of the journey started. 5 years ago when I pulled a couple of my friends together and convinced them to put some money together for us to buy this block of buildings that were in my neighborhood and that had potential but needed a lot of TLC. A lot of people said I was stupid, but this crew along with others believed in the vision. The early stages of @grnwdrow @the_belounge This is how we invest in our communities. Art gallery up and running, co-working/co-learning space up next…
