THU Jun 27: COOKING CLASS: Everything Garlic Scapes by Cameron Drew

A LOT of people really love garlic, making it one of the most popular culinary ingredients in the world. But not everyone knows about garlic’s fresh and tasty early-summer cousin, the garlic scape. Scapes are the long, curvy green shoots that grow from the garlic bulb early in the season, which are usually trimmed to allow the garlic plant to channel all of its energy into the bulb. But scapes are a delicious vegetable in their own right, available for only a few short weeks each year. Milder than garlic cloves, they are an amazing way to add garlicky flavour to your favourite dishes. They make a fantastic base for pesto, an vibrant addition to quiches, omelettes or stir-fries, but are delicious just eaten straight up, sautéed with a little salt or grilled in foil on the BBQ.

In this fun, hands-on workshop, garlic farmer Cameron Drew of Tookanoo Farms and popular market chef Richard Carmichael of The Grounded Pantry will introduce you to a variety of recipes that take advantage of this special summer treat using fresh scapes from his own farm. You'll learn how to make a rich, savoury garlic scape pesto (that freezes beautifully, so you can enjoy it all year) and tangy garlic scape quick pickles (amazing on a charcuterie plate or to take your cesear to the next level). You'll also get to try freshly roasted garlic scapes in class and get a fascinating peek into the garlic growing process.
BONUS: Farm-fresh scapes will be available for purchase for only $3lb — an amazing deal — please let us know if you would like some!

Cameron Drew and his partner Kira run Tookanoo, a garlic farm in Roseneath at the foot of the Trent Hills by the south shores of Rice Lake. Taking a permaculture approach they grow several varietals of Hardneck Music Garlic with no sprays or synthetic inputs. They seek to unlock the healing power of regenerative agriculture while producing delicious local garlic. @tookanoofarm @groundedpantry

Calling all maple syrup lovers! It’s #MapleSyrupMonth at the Saturday Farmers Market!🍁

It’s the perfect time of year to taste the delicious syrup that comes from maple trees. We gathered a list of all the vendors at the Market who either sell maple syrup by the bottle or incorporate maple syrup in their products. Here are just some of them:

🍁 @forbeswildfoods offers a wide selection of pure maple syrups at the Saturday Farmers Market. Some of their syrups are made from tree sap and others are made from flowers of fruit. Their syrups are delicious and best served on ice cream, in cakes and pies and on fruit salads.

🍁During March, @_almabakery_ will be making baklava cake with maple syrup for the Farmers Market! This is a classic Persian dessert with a Canadian twist.

🍁The popular maple Swedish knot is a regular offering at the Farmers Market, but as a special for maple syrup month, @johnsonfamilybakery will also be selling maple pecan tarts and maple bon bons. Fun fact: they boil down and crystalize maple syrup to make their own maple sugar!

🍁When you think of maple syrup, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Pancakes! The @groundedpantry has a wholesome pancake mix made with seven wholegrain flours, amaranth, flax and chia. If you’re looking for an extra boost of protein to start your day, try the pancake mix with cricket protein powder🥞

For the full list of vendors, visit the link in our bio!

We also have some fun Market Day activities planned for you during March:

🍁Maple Scavenger Hunt - Join in on a maple scavenger hunt on March 18 and 25 from 9am – 1pm! Pick up a market map from the welcome table inside the Farmers Market and look for maple leaves around the market. Then return your completed map for a maple candy prize!

🍁Maple Syrup Tasting - @forbeswildfoods will be doing a maple syrup tasing at the Farmers Market this Saturday, March 18.

🍁Weekend Nature Play Activity - Join us on March 18 and 25 in the Children's Garden during Weekend Nature Play to make bannock (fry bread) over the fire! Drizzle your warm bannock with local maple syrup from Forbes Wild Foods.

See you at the Farmers Market!🍁
