ahead of Cherry Bomb this Saturday here’s what the last one gave with @s.dotmusic. he really tore in an unmerciful fashion; I don’t even know how else to convey. there’s a shortlist of deejays who’ve reached out to The MoB over the years and/or who I’m familiar with that I immediately know are perfect for Cherry Bomb. Blair was both—he expressed a desire and I was already a fan. love it when a plan comes together. 🙏🏾 this next one is also a big deal to me. I can’t remember how long ago it was that I asked @mannydibiachi if he’d ever thought about learning to DJ. I just knew he’d be good at it as a performer and musician himself—the ear and musicality are impeccable. he said he’d already been thinking about it so I taught him how to use my XDJ, gave him some tips on queuing and transitions, booked him…and he’s been gigging regularly ever since. that’s not a testament to me, that’s all Manny—talent, hustle, work ethic. 💪🏾 soooo how’s my mentee gonna do with the Cherry Bomb assignment? I’mad excited to hear him continue to expand his genre repertoire. a hip-hop artist playing techno? this is gonna be fab. 🍒💣 oh and we’re gon wear costumes, too. cause why not? it’s late-October, why not just do thee most every chance? not in spite of the grief I’m feeling over CC’s passing, but because of it. my heart is heavy but I have to keep my eye on the prize because that’s what she did every day. an inspiration. ❤️‍🩹 Cherry Bomb - 10/24, 9pm-2am, at @spiritpgh. $10 adv/$15 door, 🎟️ link where it always is. 📸 @dawnhartmanphotography

GRIFFIN WAS BORN AND RAISED IN PITTSBURGH, PA WHERE THERE WASN’T VERY MUCH REPRESENTATION OF BLACK CREATIVES ESPECIALLY BLACK OWNED BRANDS & DESIGNERS. AT A YOUNG AGE, HE KNEW HE WANTED TO CHANGE THAT. FASHION ALWAYS PLAYED A HUGE PART IN GRIFFIN’S LIFE! FASHION WAS HIS PASSION, WHEN THE OTHER KIDS IN HIGH SCHOOL WERE APPLYING FOR COLLEGE, GRIFFIN KNEW HE WANTED TO FOCUS ON BECOMING A FASHION DESIGNER. ART SCHOOL WAS TOO EXPENSIVE FOR HIM SO HE WENT A DIFFERENT ROUTE, HE GOT HIS EXPERIENCE BY WORKING IN RETAIL. IT WASN’T UNTIL HE STARTED WORKING AT NORDSTROM IS WHEN HE FELT CLOSER AND CLOSER TO HIS DREAM OF BECOMING A DESIGNER. HE BECAME MORE FAMILIAR WITH WOMENSWEAR & MENSWEAR JUST FROM STYLING HIS CLIENTS WHO SHOPPED WITH HIM EXCLUSIVELY. HE WAS THE TOP SELLER IN HIS DEPARTMENT, HE WON AWARDS, HIS FACE WAS PLASTERED ON A WALL WITH THE OTHER TOP SELLERS WHO WORKED IN THE STORE. HE KNEW THIS WASN’T THE END THOUGH, HIS DREAM WAS STILL ON HIS MIND DAILY. H

Earlier this month, we hosted a screening of ‘Paid Leave’, the companion short film to ‘overdraft.’ followed by a conversation with the creative team about experimentation, collaboration, the offscreen realities, and the joy of world-building. Moderated by Kimberly Jones, the discussion brought local artists across fashion, sound, cinematography , photography, and more: Tyeasha Clarke // Creative Director + Curator Vondre Clark // Photographer Carly Heywood // Art Director + Creative Producer Ashton Wilson // Director of Photography Griffin Wilson // Designer + Stylist Madame Trio // Sonic Artist + Movement Carly reflected on world-building as self-understanding and the devotional work of collective care across such a multifaceted project. Tyeasha spoke honestly about getting a show off the ground (“a lot of late nights, a lot of spreadsheets”) and the euphoria when it all comes together. Vondre talked about releasing his inner child for this work, and why documentation matters so much when your own childhood has so little of it. 📸: @dymond__j ‘overdraft.’ closes this Friday. Join us for the closing reception during Downtown’s Final Friday Gallery Crawl — June 26, 6–8PM // The Bank, 650 Smithfield Street.

We took a minute to curate a few recent editorial shoots that have been living in our heads rent-free. Heavy on the visual storytelling, so let's give these teams their credit. Which one are you feeling the most? #grixmagazine #culture #editorialphotography #creativecommunity
