Brooklyn: the borough that shows up for each other 💙

From parks to pantries, community centers to collection sites, farms to food distributions, Brooklyn Org Volunteer Day was powered by neighbors stepping up across neighborhoods and communities, rain or shine. This is what it looks like when Brooklyn Backs Brooklyn.

Huge thank you to every volunteer, partner, and supporter who made it happen 🙌

We’re already counting down to next year!

Grief touches our community in many ways. It’s not just about death.

It’s the quiet weight many are carrying during a season of uncertainty.

This week, the termination of TPS for Haitian immigrants was blocked, bringing relief, but not erasing the emotional toll.

At GTR, we are making space for healing. Le Kè a Lou is a six-week sacred grief group, fully in Haitian Creole, for those mourning loved ones, missed goodbyes, and the life many hoped for in the US.

Fridays 7-9 PM at 1280 Flatbush Ave. Call 800-461-9350 for more info.

You do not have to carry this alone.
We heal in community.

Sponsored by Councilmember Farah Louis and Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn.

KREYÒL
Lapenn manyen kominote nou a nan plizyè fason. Le nou pèdi moun nou renmen isit la oswa nan Ayiti.

Epi chay silansye anpil moun ap pote pandan yon sezon ensekirite.

Semèn sa a, yo bloke fen TPS pou Ayisyen, sa ki pote soulajman, men ki pa efase chay emosyonèl la.

Nan GTR, n ap kreye espas pou gerizon. Le Kè a Lou se yon gwoup lapenn sakre pandan sis semèn, an kreyòl ayisyen, pou moun k ap lapenn, ak moun ki pedi espwa nan Amerik.

Ou pa pou kont ou.
Nou geri kòm kominote.

Due to the winter storm and dangerously cold temperatures, @nycemergencymanagement has deployed emergency warming centers across all five boroughs to provide safe, heated indoor spaces for vulnerable New Yorkers.

One of the warming centers has been activated within District 45 at Midwood High School, 2839 Bedford Ave. (Glenwood & Campus RD)

Additional locations have been opened citywide to ensure broad access during hazardous weather conditions (see below and attached for alternate locations).

I strongly encourage residents to use these warming centers if needed and to check on neighbors, seniors, and others at greater risk. Protecting one another during severe weather is a shared responsibility.

We’re still dancing over here 🤸🏾‍♂️

@BklynOrg announced $1.5 MILLION in funding to Brooklyn nonprofits, and GTR made the list!

Yes, we’re grateful.
And yes, we write a lot of grants.

Here are some of Dr. Flo’s unfiltered RFP tips, straight from the desk of someone who’s been on both sides of “rejected” and “funded”:
📌 Write for the services you already provide (stop inventing programs for every new grant🫢)
📌Read the RFP multiple times (at least once for vision, once for compliance)
📌Answer the question being asked, not the one you wish they asked😒
📌Be clear, not clever. Funders fund clarity
📌Show impact with people, not just programs
📌Budgets should tell the same story as the narrative
📌Proofread like your funding depends on it… because it does
📌“Submitted” is not the win; alignment is

Grants aren’t just about good writing, they’re about good alignment.

Thank you, Brooklyn Org, for investing in community-rooted work. Funds go to creating a safe haven for under-resourced individuals during these challenging times.

And shoutout to our team who brings the mission to life every day.

More to come. Always.
