Can you get pregnant after a myomectomy (fibroid removal)?

📊 This reel uses statistics from published research, but we know that much of the evidence is poor quality. We urgently need larger, better-designed studies and longer-term data to understand how fibroid removal really affects fertility and pregnancy outcomes.

❤️ Many of my patients have gone on to have babies after myomectomy and some of whom I’ve had the privilege of delivering myself! And lots more are currently pregnant!

So what does the research tell us?

🔹 30–60% of women become pregnant after myomectomy.

🔹 28–65% go on to have a live birth, although results vary widely between studies.

🔹 Size matters! A small study from 2006 found that women who had fibroids larger than 5 cm removed had approximately 4 times the pregnancy rate compared with women whose fibroids were left untreated.

🔹 Location matters! Fibroids that distort the uterine cavity are more likely to affect fertility.

🔹 Keyhole vs open surgery: No clear difference in pregnancy or live birth rates.

🔹 Not all fibroids need removing before trying for a baby.

❤️ Remember, fibroids are often removed to improve symptoms such as heavy bleeding, pain and pressure and not just fertility.

Fibroids don't always cause symptoms, but when they do, they can affect much more than their health.

Research has found that women with symptomatic fibroids can experience lost working hours and reduced productivity while at work. One European study found that 32.7% of employed women with diagnosed fibroids reported absenteeism, while overall worker productivity was reduced by 36.1%.

Yet the impact of gynaecological conditions can still be misunderstood in the workplace.

The petition calls for conditions such as fibroids to be explicitly recognised in the Equality Act 2010 Guidance as impairments with fluctuating or recurring effects, helping employers better understand the potential impact and the importance of appropriate support.

It's time to take women's health seriously at work.
