Australian Black-breasted Buzzards instinctively use rocks to break open emu eggs.

This behavior is hardwired into their biology, not learned by seeing others do it. Studies show that even young buzzards raised in captivity, without being around adults, will pick up rocks and attempt to crack eggs when presented with them.

This suggests the behavior is an innate instinct, likely evolved due to the nutritional value of emu eggs (up to 900 grams of protein-rich content) and the need to access their thick shells. The buzzards’ brains are pre-programmed to recognize rocks as tools for this purpose, similar to how some bird species instinctively know to build specific nests.
