Four Years of the Trail Running 2032 Campaign: Navigating the Mountains Behind the Scenes

Four years ago this month, fresh off the trails of the Western States Endurance Run, and inspired by conversations with some of our sport's truest stalwarts, we launched the Trail Running 2032 (TR2032) campaign. The vision was bold: to bring trail running to the global stage, in Brisbane.

Since June 2022, we’ve crossed some incredible checkpoints. We’ve elevated and progressed the discussion globally alongside brilliant partners at @trailrunningqld, @itra_trail, @wmramountainrun and @iau_ultrarunning.

But if you’ve ever run an trail, mountain or ultra endurance race, you know the terrain changes.

The last eight months in particular have been a rollercoaster of immense support and deep challenge. To be completely transparent and skip the sugarcoating: we haven’t achieved our next major checkpoint, and it is most likely we won't by the end of 2026 as planned.

A Failed Goal, But a Learning Opportunity.

In endurance sports, a missed split or an unexpected event isn't the end of the race; it's data. It's a learning opportunity.

Trying to navigate the "mountains" of a highly complex, politically charged sporting environment to achieve something that has never been done before is a massive undertaking.

Where we stand right now: Our team is still pushing on, but a significant portion of the process is currently far outside our sphere of control. The behind-the-scenes processes need to play out, and the right stakeholders need to come together to make the definitive decisions.

The Race Isn't Over.

We aren't done yet. We will continue to push forward where and when we can, even if our updates are a bit quieter for a while.

To everyone who has backed TR2032 over the last four years: thank you. This has been an incredible adventure of personal and collective growth, learning, and resilience.

You will hear from us again, either when the next mountain is ready to be run up, or when we’ve gone as far as humanly possible. Until then, see you on the trails. 🌲🏃‍♂️

Girls had a walking buddy today and they were surprised (as was I) with a 4.50am wakeup but it was totally worth it to see Addison in her element, easy 8k trail run before school ♥️

Organising uni study notes on the drive down.
The search for the left shoe (thanks meagan for finding it).
Start and run with a few good chats.
Mini dance with Meagan along the way and getting a good yap session with Tracy Baker on the 2nd loop.
Amazing to finish with cake and coffee.
Gotta love the community trail events

Big news in Australian trail running.

Australian Ultra Runners Association President @coachgarymullins and Vice President @gusthetrailrunner have stepped down and it’s raised a lot of questions across the trail community.

In this episode, Gary and Geoff speak openly about what led to the decision, the internal challenges they faced, and why athlete advocacy, team selection, and governance became major pressure points.

We also look ahead to what the upcoming AGM could mean, what they hope happens next, and what needs to change to keep Australian trail running moving forward.

If you care about the future of the sport in Australia, this conversation is worth your time.

Think you’re fast? The 50-year-olds might be faster. 📉

Taper time for the Snowies 50k? We crunched the numbers to find the "Gold Standard" for the upcoming National Championships.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀: You don’t need to win Overall to claim a National Title. Under AUTRA rules, the winner of EVERY Age Group is awarded an official National Championship Title (if you are an Aus Citizen/PR).

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸: The standard is brutal. The data proves technical trails reward experience over youth.

The M50-59 Winner (4:45:30) ran 17 minutes faster than the M18-29 Champion.

2025 Championship Targets: 🥇 M40-49: 4:28 (Grant Brisbin) 🥇 M50-59: 4:45 (Neil Spreitzer) 🥇 F18-29: 5:16 (Grace Harrison)

Don't wait for the "Masters" categories to try and snipe a title. They are the ones pushing the pace.

Are you in the hunt? Check your Age Group Ranking via the link in our bio.

The 12km Hightail trail loop around Mt Coot-Tha is looking good and fast! A group on Sunday cruised around the course, taking in the sights and enjoying nature.

Entries are open and there is a bib with your name on it!

Jonty Bush the member for Cooper and Geoff Russell from TRAQ. After repeated assaults on women at Mt Cootha - the Reclaim the Trails event was organised to show solidarity and support. Tara chats with Virginia after the event, but was on a flight home from the USA at the time it took place, so Bryce went along and had a chat with some of the organisers and participants who attended.
