GAMBIE

La Gambie est un petit pays horizontal enclavé dans le Sénégal. Ce pays est séparé en deux parties, nord et sud, par le fleuve Gambie.

Après avoir rejoint les copains @gustontour au sud de l’enclave gambienne, nous avons passé 15 jours ensemble au sein du pays. Longer le fleuve Gambie nous a permis de nous ressourcer mais aussi de voir nos premiers chimpanzés et notre premier hippo du voyage !

Pour nous, la Gambie a été « un long fleuve tranquille » 😌

💖 Avant de partir en Afrique, on avait acheté un appareil photo jetable, un peu pour le fun, sans imaginer qu’il deviendrait un trésor

📸 On vient de développer les photos, et en les découvrant, on a eu cette étrange sensation de remonter le temps, de revivre chaque instant.

✨ Les paysages sont magnifiques, bien sûr. Des horizons qu’on n’oublie pas, des couleurs qu’aucun objectif moderne n’arriverait à traduire. Mais en feuilletant ces clichés imparfaits, ce n’est pas la grandeur des décors qui nous touche le plus… c’est la simplicité des sourires, les rires partagés, les moments suspendus avec des personnes incroyables rencontrées en chemin.

☀️Finalement, cet appareil jetable a capturé ce qu’on n’attendait pas : la preuve que les plus beaux souvenirs ne se mesurent pas en panoramas, mais en rencontres.

Belgian couple Alexandre and Marie-Garance just spent 18 months overlanding around Africa — in a 4x4 they weren’t even planning to buy! 🤭

“We’d rented a 4X4 to travel the Garden Route for two weeks. After that, we both dreamed about our next trip in South Africa — but wouldn’t it be more fun with our own car? Like that, the dream became bigger and bigger. 🌍

“One day, out of the blue, we saw a second-hand Defender advertised, and we went to just have a look at it, because we’re not crazy enough to buy a car just like that… That’s what we thought. We saw the car and directly fell in love with it. That’s how Gust joined our family.” 🫶🏻

Starting in Kenya in December 2023, the pair traveled through Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Lesotho, Namibia, Botswana, Angola, DRC, Congo, Gabon, Cameroon, Nigeria, Benin, Togo, and Ghana, reaching the Côte d’Ivoire 500 days later.

They left West Africa a couple of weeks ago to attend a wedding back in Belgium — their own! 💒 👰🏻 🤵🏻

“The ‘normal’ procedure is to find a job, get married, buy a house, have a child. We didn’t want to start our life together like that, we first wanted to get out of our comfort zone and enjoy life to the fullest.”

True to form, in September, the couple will return to the Côte d’Ivoire to be reunited with Gust and finish the route they planned — continuing through West Africa to Morocco, where they’ll board a boat and drive home. Back in Belgium. Gust will remain part of the family.

“We love not having to take the touristic tours, being able to live with less stuff and having it always with us, living day by day and deciding every morning where to go next, living outside and meeting lots of people.

“We’re already dreaming about our next trip. We really love Türkiye 🇹🇷 — it’s a country that’s made to be discovered by overlanding.”

Aus- Namibia 🇳🇦

More horsepower needed!

Before continuing our journey further north into Namibia, taking in the spectacular views along the D707, we stopped in at a small shelter on the Garub plains close to a man made water source.

Here we encountered the wild horses of Aus or Namib desert horses. One of two feral herds in Africa, it is thought that they are the descendants of riding and cavalry horses, released or escaped from various farms in the early 20th century. Whatever their origin, they have been surviving well in this harsh desert environment, and watching them fight and play in the midday heat was a real spectacle to behold.

After our equine lunch stop we continued on to find camp with our new friends Alex and MG. Much of the land in this area is fenced and wild camping is a challenge, but a couple of local farmers let us set up camp on their land. A beautiful spot to spend an evening sharing stories, baking cakes and knocking back Amarula and chocolate.
