On Friday, October 9, more than 50 GVSU Symphony Orchestra students, led by Dr. Joel Schut, recorded the anthem for the new soccer stadium in downtown Grand Rapids. The sessions took place at the Haas Performing Arts Center on GVSU’s Valley Campus, with students recording percussion, strings, brass, and woodwinds.

Working with LA-based composer Hugo Bombardier and orchestrator Theron Low, along with Toronto-based producer Mark Vreeken, students gained hands-on experience in a professional recording setting. The finished recording will be used in connection with the launch of AC Grand Rapids Pro Soccer Club this spring.

Projects like this are a great example of the experiential learning opportunities available to GVSU Music, Theatre, and Dance students through the CLAS Voyage initiative.

Way to go, Lakers! 🎶

The first production of the 2026-2027 season is
✨A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM ✨
by William Shakespeare
Adapted and Directed by Demetria Thomas

October 2-11
Louis Armstrong Theatre

This is Shakespeare at his most unhinged: a tangle of lovesick nobles, meddling fairies, and incompetent actors stumbling through a forest where almost everyone makes poor decisions. With musical inspiration from the 1950s and the 1980s, this glorious romp through the forest is a reminder that love is irrational, dreams are stranger than reality, and the universe always enjoys a practical joke.

Presented by the Grand Valley Shakespeare Festival
