Today is the first National Women in Medicine Day.

On slide 2 are 15 women whose work is changing medicine right now, and I have the privilege of sharing a stage with next week at the Women In Medicine Summit™. Physicians, researchers, public health leaders, advocates, and trainees, across specialties and career stages.

And here’s why this day matters: women are now the majority of U.S. medical school graduates, but only 25% of department chairs. The pipeline is full. The top isn’t. That gap didn’t happen by accident, and applause alone won’t close it.

That’s why this day exists. It isn’t another round of “thank you for all you do.” It’s a day for visibility, accountability, and real commitments. And it doesn’t belong to any one organization. It belongs to every hospital, society, practice, and person who decides to show up.

If you’re an individual, write five specific lines about a woman whose work deserves a bigger room, share her work, and recommend her for one real opportunity.
If you lead a team or an institution, share your numbers, put a woman in a visible role, and make one public commitment with a date attached.

Then tell me in the comments: who is one woman whose work changed how you practice medicine? Tag her. Let’s make her impossible to overlook.

Next week I’m taking you inside the Women in Medicine Summit™ from September 24-26 in Chicago. Follow @shikhajainmd and @wimedicineorg so you don’t miss it.
