I am an independent comicbook artist and illustrator in San Diego, California. Visual storytelling is something I really love.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

May 16th (cue Lagwagon) was officially my last day as an instructor at Little Fish Comic Book Studio. I spent the last 8 years there and its been an incredible and truly fulfilling experience. When I got let go from IDW Publishing, my confidence took a hit. I thought that was as far as I was going to get in comics. I had already built a friendship with Alonso Nuñez, the founder of Little Fish during my time managing the San Diego Comic Art Gallery and he suggested my joining the studio as writing instructor. Accepting the position was one of the best decisions I've made. It wasn't just a writing class - it was character building, it was comics history, it was comics theory, it was community for my students and for me. I learned so much from my students as well. I loved every bit of that.⁣
⁣
Thank you to all the students who took a seat and listened to me talk, ramble, pontificate, and mostly teach. It was my privilege to get do this. I loved reading your stories and I loved watching you all grow as both storytellers and as people. Everyone of you already had the ability to achieve your dreams. I'm happy I get to play a small part of your story. ⁣
⁣
Thank you to my fellow instructors. You're all amazingly talented in ways I will never be. Keep setting the bar and keep giving the students more to aspire to. Your guidance and your compassion, more than the lesson plans, are what allows the students to see comics as more of a tangible goal than a nebulous idea.⁣
⁣
Finally, thank you @alonsonunezart! The San Diego comics community is better for Little Fish and all that its cultivated. Landing at the Fish helped me not only get my confidence back, but new opportunities came from this - moderating and speaking on panels at San Diego Comic Fest, San Diego Comic-Con, WonderCon, and the Comic-Con Museum to eventually becoming an Eisner Awards Judge in 2023. Thank you for offering me a place to land and a space to grow.⁣

Today was such a special day at Little Fish Comic Book Studio. A few of my students and one of my fellow instructors gifted me this amazing TMNT art based on the short story pitch that Nick and I put together a handful of years back during my IDW days. As a special nod, the sketch that Leonardo and Michelangelo got is of Jack and David Knight from my favorite series, 'Starman'. There's also a long eared cameo from a certain someone in the background.⁣
⁣
Teaching and guiding is the most fulfilling thing I've done in years and I'm so happy that my first love - comic books and storytelling - are what I get to teach. Everyone at Little Fish, from my students to my fellow instructors make feel like the luckiest guy in the world. I'm so grateful for all of you.⁣

Founding CASD member @hadavisart submitted this reflective piece for our first members challenge. It’s been a long 2 years for all of us, hopefully we are all a little higher up the mountain.
