The advantage of studying both Communication Arts and Film & Media Studies—grounded with International Relations—is seeing the intersections. Media is not just what we consume. It’s the channel through which the public talks to itself, and through which politics speaks to us.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve seen the headlines: Stephen Colbert’s “Late Show” canceled by CBS, and Jimmy Kimmel’s program suspended after remarks about right-wing reactions to the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

So, the question we’re raising at Moses Minded: Should you be concerned?

America has a long, complicated history with censorship. During WWI, The Espionage Act of 1917 and the Sedition Act of 1918 criminalized speech deemed “disloyal,” targeting newspapers, pamphlets, and dissenting voices. 1950s McCarthyism fueled a culture of fear: journalists, entertainers, and government employees were blacklisted for perceived communist sympathies.

Today, the echoes are familiar. Trump-appointed Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr threatened legal action if local ABC affiliates didn’t respond to Kimmel’s remarks. Nexstar, which operates multiple ABC stations, pulled Kimmel from the air—coincidentally while seeking FCC approval for a $6.2 billion dollar merger. Sinclair Broadcasting, the largest ABC affiliate owner, followed suit.

For Colbert, CBS cited “financial reasons” for canceling “The Late Show,” thought its parent company was also finalizing a deal requiring FCC approval—raising questions about timing and influence.

These are not isolated incidents—they are signals. From France to Haiti, from Nepal to countless other revolutions, governments that overplay their hand are toppled—not strengthened.

This is not about left or right. This is about the core principles of a democracy that promises free expression. Those in power have a responsibility to protect the voice least heard, not to muzzle them.

Media censorship, in any form, is not a distant issue. It is a warning sign. Ignore it and America risks joining the list of nations that thought silencing dissent could secure stability—only to be undone by their own heavy hand.

Do we all deserve the same rights?

This was the question tossed around at a recent dinner with friends. At first glance, it feels absurd—of course we all deserve the same rights. But in today’s climate, where fear and upheaval have become so constant that numbness feels like the only survival strategy, the question lands differently.

The problem stems from whether we should be subjected to the poor choices of the majority. The average American reads at a sixth-grade reading level. That means many of us simply can’t parse the complexities of how our government functions. Amendments and laws-written in dense, precise language—get watered down until they lose all nuance.

And so we arrive at the paradox: if democracy requires an informed citizenry, is today’s America proof of what happens when citizens are never properly educated to be informed?

History warns us that restricting rights is a dangerous path—once you start drawing lines about who “deserves” them, there’s no telling what else can be taken away. Every human should enjoy the same liberties, even if they can’t comprehend the Constitution line for line. Still, it’s hard not to wonder: if only those who were well-informed, empathetic, and invested in the common good could vote or run for office, how different might our nation look?

Of course, that’s not a real solution. It’s a thought experiment—a frustration with how money and greed dominate the American narrative. Because the issue isn’t that people are “too stupid” for democracy. The issue is that our systems starve people of civic education and then sell them cheap slogans as policy—our rights are too easily manipulated.

At the dinner table we found ourselves asking bigger questions, too: Are we still operating under an industrial-era government model with no room for modern realities? Why does the Republican Party—structurally devoted to the 1%—still attract so much loyalty from the working class? (Questions for another day, maybe.)

But the focus lingers here: if greed and money weren’t the loudest voices in American politics, maybe then the rights we all deserve would feel less like abstractions, and more like real tools for building community.

I divide people into two groups: those raised by entrepreneurs, and those raised by people who work for them.

There is a difference.

I grew up surrounded by people who never answered to anyone—my father, mother, paternal grandmother, even my godmother juggled multiple business ventures. They went to work when they wanted, took holidays when they wanted, and held within their hands the livelihoods of many. That shaped me. They had voice, control, and choice, and they handed that down. So naturally, I gravitated toward people who spoke the same language.

I was raised under the notion that there wasn’t anything I could not do. Which is why stepping into the corporate world felt like stepping into a different planet. Suddenly, I was no longer adjacent to power, I was under it. And yet, everyone around me pretended they held it, or maybe just didn’t know what real power looked—or felt—like.

The attitudes of those clutching a modicum of authority baffled me because of the caricatures they warped themselves into. What I’ve learned from those raised in worker households is that the illusion of corporate hierarchy survives only because many accept the myth of the ladder—when in truth it’s a clock. Interdependent. If even the smallest gear fails, the system’s operation slows or ceases.

Which is why everyone is replaceable. But no one is replicable. Your skills and experiences are singular, so advancement is political: what leverage do you bring, and who will back you?

Here is what the kids of entrepreneurs learn early: an owner answers to themselves. CEOs answer to investors, boards, and shareholders. The difference between a leader and a boss is the difference between earned respect and borrowed ego.

You have voice. Use it. Question. Negotiate. Set terms. Stand your ground. Define compromise. Work is for experience, not titles. Titles are rented. Experience is wealth that can be leveraged for your own personal gain, either to your current employer, or another.

The choice is yours. Give your skills to whoever values them the most—whoever signs the biggest cheque.
