This month’s Travel Style conversation is with Haley Seidel, and true to form it starts in the middle of a bamboo forest outside Kyoto. We talked about the hotel she still thinks about years later, the packing habit she finally let go of, and why her first move in any new city is a conversation before it’s ever a checklist. AOW: Your overall impression of Milan Design Week—what was the vibe in a few words?

@haleysei - “Over-the-top, immersive, collaborative, and inspiring. Milan Design Week felt like a sensory overload in the best possible way. Every installation, showroom, and exhibition seemed designed to fully engage visitors, making it feel less like attending a trade show and more like stepping into a city-wide celebration of design and craftsmanship.”

Haley Seidel builds collections around craft for a living, which means she travels the way a buyer travels, less interested in the shop than in the workshop behind it. In this month’s Where They Travel & Why she gets specific about her love for Paris and Portugal, and it reframed how I think about building a trip around making rather than sightseeing.
