“The Bango Lesson” est. 1893
Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859-1937)

I was honored to visit the @hamptonumuseum to see the “The Bango Lesson”.

I grew up watching this photo hung in my granddaddy’s living room. I’ve always enjoyed the message & meaning behind the photo, so to see it in person was nothing more than a dream come true! I think my grandfather loved this picture as it depicted his relationship with his only son. I don’t think he fully understood the history of it, or how impactful it was to the art community.

Nonetheless, it was an amazing experience! This photo has been housed at the Hampton University Museum since 1894. If I ever need to reset or to go back to my foundation, this is where I’ll be 🥹✨

The Hampton University Museum is the oldest African American museum in the United States and one of
the oldest museums in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
