Natural Egg 🥚 Dyeing

This weekend we made Easter eggs using natural dyes. I have wanted to try this for a long time and I was happy that my mom @hanehill was just as excited as I was.

We used what we had on hand to create the dyes, including avocados, coffee, turmeric, onion skins and blueberries. The reddish brown of the onion skins turned out to be my favorite!

To create the botanical patterns, we used nylons and some herbs and vegetable leaves from my parents garden.

I would love to try this again next year with red cabbage and some other natural dyes! I hope you had a lovely Easter weekend with new and old traditions.

[NOT MY WORK]

On the way home from Athens, we stopped at the @freedomcenter in Cincinnati to see the quilts in the exhibition “We Are the Story: A Visual Reaction to Racism”, curated by Dr. @carolynlmazloomi and courtesy of the Women of Color Quilters Network. It’s a powerful collection of work.

Dr. Mazloomi writes, “Why use quilts to tell this story of issues of race in America? Because quilting is one of America’s most powerful art forms, with its widespread appeal and its association with comfort, warmth and healing. Quilts and quilt making are especially important to African American culture, because the art form was historically one of the few mediums accessible to marginalized groups to tell their own story, to provide warmth for their families, and to empower them with a voice.”

The quilts shown here are:

-Charleena Lyles by @claranartey

This weekend I arranged some of our bird resources, artworks and objects. We are a family of collectors and creators, so each item has a specific meaning and memory for me. ⁣
