Still thinking about my few days in Oʻahu 🌊🌺

A few weeks ago, I got to join an incredible group of young ocean leaders for the @oceanuprise Summit.

We learned from some amazing people across the ocean space, got hands-on sorting marine debris, spent time learning from Hawaiʻi and the people who call it home, and had so many conversations about conservation, community, and the future of our ocean.

I also got to screen The Last Fin during our film night 🎬💙 Sharing something so personal to me with a group of people equally passionate about our ocean was incredibly special.

But the best part was the people. I left Oʻahu with new friendships, new perspectives, and even more excitement for what’s ahead. 🌊

So grateful for this community. 🫶🏼

Another year speaking at @oceanuprise – a gathering of young ocean climate leaders skill building for planet ocean 🌊 @parley.tv

I chose to lift them up around ocean advocacy this year, because it’s our pathway to changemaking under the current systems we have in place and can be SO complex to navigate as a passionate young person wanting to make a difference.

My workshop centered testimony creation, deep dive into different tactics to employ, and I got to share some key wins from @futureswell like our pilot creator lab, our national partnerships, and the momentum we’re building with our creator coalition. We had a handful of coalition members as participants in the summit, some that I got to squeeze in person for the first time after working together for months 🥹

I was honored to be speaking alongside legends that have given their voice to our planet and communities for so long – truly the best first “work” opportunity back 🌊🌍 @chaleia_nokea @mikecoots @marina_alaska

Everything I packed in my carry-on for 3 months of travel ✈️🌍 — getting ready to sail from New Zealand to French Polynesia!! ⚓🌊

I’m using my Patagonia 55L duffle and it seriously goes everywhere with me!! Packed for cooler southern latitudes and the tropics 🌦️🌴

To be fair, I had a checked bag with my bulkier sailing + scuba gear 🤿

Be honest… did I overpack? 🙈

It’s crazy how much can change in one year.

My education is what I’m most grateful for. I just wish I could tell my past self there is so much more to life than lecture halls and textbooks.

Another inspiring experience at the Hope Summit in Charleston, SC this year! The summit this time was expanded with a film festival, community fair, and two days of the conference with many speakers, immersive talks, and engaging testimonies all about how to adopt a “blue mind” outlook in our own personal lives.

Our Hub advisor, Will, and past President, Kyle, went to represent our Hub and gain insights on how we can bring this “blue mind” perspective back to the UNC campus and our local Hub. Besides being the name of the summit, Hope was a tangible common theme throughout all four days fueled by the inspiring community leaders, young people, students, and ocean advocates driving change for a better future. It can often be disheartening with so much negativity surrounding the news leading towards a future of despair. But not here at the Hope Summit! Local action drives global changes and that is what is happening here in Charleston as well as along the coast in surrounding areas. From resilient architecture in South Florida, Blake Plateau conservation advocacy, learning more about the Gullah Geechee culture, the Marsh project in Charleston, as well as the personal connection people have with water, Hope is abundant and is woven throughout our daily lives. Like water, it is often taken for granted. But in abundance, it is a powerful force for change.

Thank you to Grey, Carolina Ocean Alliance, and Sustainable Ocean Alliance for their support and assistance for putting together this summit. I wish you Water and I wish you Hope.

Yesterday’s Back-to-School Sustainability Panel was incredibly insightful! 🌱 We explored how different student organizations contribute to sustainability on campus, shared impactful memories, and discussed ways for everyone to get involved in the environmental community. Let’s keep the momentum going!

Next up: Join us for our next meeting on “Climate Action Across All Levels”. We’ll cover local actions with MYCC and international efforts like the UNGA/NYC Climate Week. 💚

See you next Monday, 9/23, at 6:30 pm in CAS B06A (room change‼️)
