The first episode of A Collection Of… Spaces in 2026 is a conversation with Liang-Jung Chen, an artist, researcher and collector.

I visited @liangjung_chen at her live/work studio in Poplar, East London, where she has been based as part of a three-year residency at the Acme Fire Station. The space functions as both home and studio, supporting a practice that moves between making, research and reflection.

I first came across Liang through @hardware_archive and was curious about how the project has evolved over time. We spoke about the process of collecting, researching and cataloguing everyday household items, and how the archive operates as an ongoing research space that elevates ubiquitous hardware, objects often overlooked yet deeply embedded in daily life.

Our conversation explored how Liang uses her space, and the realities of being a full-time artist in London while also taking part in international residencies and workshops. We talked about the challenges of finding short-term work with other artists and arts organisations, and how this shapes the rhythm of her practice.

I left the conversation thinking about what it means to live and work in the same space, something many people struggle to separate both physically and mentally. It echoed my earlier conversation with Daniel Eatock and the idea of treating everything as one, the work you make and the life you live unified in a way that allows ideas to emerge, overlap and evolve.

Enjoy!

As an organisation we primarily curate and commission site specific works. The Mother Goddess of the Three Realms exhibition was no exception.

We asked @liangjung_chen to propose an intervention for the space as part of her ongoing @hardware_archive project. ‘Rope In Action’ an aerial installation for the transitional space between water and heaven. The work consists of strung and knotted elements that elevates ubiquitous hardware items into a sculptural structure, acting as a piece of wayfinding and lifting us from the everyday.

Liang-jung Chen is an artist and researcher working across drawing, object, installation and performance. Her practice is informed by material culture in anthropological study which leads her to investigate the usage, consumption, creation, and trade of artefacts as well as the behaviours, norms, and rituals that the artefacts take part in.

Welcome to the Water Realm

Knowledge, like water, is both endless yet precious. The works in this space are presentations by individuals and organisations who are offering opportunities for community and exchange, via institutional or alternative methods, they have all created local ecosystems to ensure the preservation and continuous flow of vital tangible and intangible resources.

‘Mother Goddess of the Three Realms’ is a place for knowledge exchange and runs until the 24th September @centre151

⠀
finally furnished a virtual gallery to house my beloved hardware items at @hardware_archive . with the misused project, my unusual obsession with household hardware has been growing nonstop since 2018. it eventually evolved into an inherent habit of mine to scrutinise every piece of hardware item that i have come across.
⠀
hopefully it will become a collective database with contribution from all over the world. drop me a direct message or an email at liang@initial-initiatives.org to share the hardware items that intrigues you in your local neighbourhood.

@the_misused, a brainchild that I worked on from 2018 to 2020 is shortlisted within the Homeware Design category by Dezeen Awards 2021. A public vote is now taking place and I’d like to kindly ask those who had enjoyed the project to give us a tick.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀
‘A multifaceted project that challenges the existing product design approach, The Misused serves as a participatory design platform that invites the public to elevate ubiquitous hardware to quality homeware through a series of creative exercises such as research, reconfiguration, local material sourcing, democratic fabrication, and more. The outcome is a collection of both practical and thought-provoking homeware products that can be done by anyone, anywhere and anytime, with just a twist of creativity required.’
