item｜hagoita bolt
⠀
notes｜ a metal connector bolting two timber beams together in japanese wooden construction. one end is a flat perforated plate nailed into the beam face; the other is a threaded bolt passing through the adjoining beam, secured with a nut.

named after the hagoita 羽子板 — the wooden paddle used in hanetsuki, a traditional japanese game — for its resemblance to the paddle’s shape. mandatory under japan’s earthquake-resistant building standards since 2000.

item｜fire insurance plaque
⠀
notes｜a cast iron, lead or brass plaque affixed to the exterior of a building to identify it as insured. first introduced in britain by the sun fire office in 1710, each insurance company maintained its own fire brigade, which prioritised insured buildings. by 1825 the marks served more as advertisement than instruction. still visible on older buildings across the uk and usa.

interview with anima magazine, words by ayla angelos. we talk about vernacular hardware, why these anonymous objects carry a quiet form of zeitgeist, and why documenting things that already exist so effectively has made me more cautious about making anything new. link in bio.

item｜ceramic water filter disc
⠀
notes｜from fustat (medieval cairo), 8th–16th century. the pierced disc sits inside a water jug, separating the vessel into two chambers — debris collects above, filtered water passes below. the hole pattern is simultaneously the filtration mechanism and the decorative motif.
