We are inextricably tethered to place. Watched over, guarded/guided, working with, continuously shaped by our environment, The people, land, animals, plants that we belong to, Woven into the greater web of life. Woven here, into a place colored by extremes. Held somewhere in the intricacies of a desert that holds so much life. It’s by design that we are formed and changed by where we are born and live, that our bodies respond to and reflect that which is part of our environment. On November 21st, from 9am-12pm, we’ll be gathering at Hawk + Horse Ranch for a morning of presence with this, of connecting as women who mirror Earth’s cycles, and deepening our relationship to our animal kin and the Mojave. Sweat fest + kids bingo was a massive success. We raised $1090 to help protect our schools and had an absolute blast doing so. Congrats to all the winners. Big THANKS to everyone who endured the humid heat and to our awesome prize sponsors! What a night! It never ceases to amaze me how brilliant our community is … Monday nights are truly something special to witness in the desert! We just crossed the $160K mark for funds raised. You guys are truly wonderful … and I’m gushing … there’s also a chance I might have heat stroke 🥵

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure and honor of spending some time with Wren @hawkandhorse and her horses, Sunny and Epona, at their beautiful high desert sanctuary. August was fast, and full, and felt somehow simultaneously like it was several lifetimes, and like it was over before my eyes could adjust to the light. This morning was a standout moment of slowness and beautiful presence before plunging into the space between eclipses, and I’m so grateful for it. I’ve been in transition with many things lately, not totally clear where I am headed and a lot falling away. As always, art has been my compass. This past week creating this custom canvas for a gathering @hawkandhorse became a creative devotional anchor. Designed on my iPad and transferred to a large loose canvas @wayfinder_studio . I combined desert symbols to form a tapestry of fire horse Mojave lore that spoke to themes of interconnectedness, wild spirit and earth belonging. I made the finishing touches in the desert and setup a painting station to share with everyone who came. A dozen women came together to share stories, hardships of entrepreneurship, voices of encouragement and gut laughs. Desert women are made of something special and I was honored to share this piece with them to collaborate on. Thank yall for being so generous with your magic and friendship. I’ll be back in the dez soon. 🌞

WILD WOMEN OF THE DESERT 🌵 A woman, her horses, and sacred land in the high desert - @hawkandhorse Wren works with horse medicine and healing shamanic journeys, creating a space for people to reconnect, listen, and remember something deeper within themselves. I’ve been so inspired by the women I’ve met here in the high desert - women who have chosen a different kind of life. Women who create, heal, build, wander, tend to the land, and follow something they can feel but can’t always explain. Desert Bingo Birthday Bashes are where it’s at! We had two celebrations try their luck last night and it was a blast! We also raised $990 for the Joshua Tree No-Kill Shelter! Congrats to all the winners! Michael increased his ruling lead by one, Margeaux added another two wins to her tally, and Solan is now the lucky wearer of Lousy Trucker hat no 28. Big thanks to all our awesome prize sponsors, DJ Jolene for the tunes, Michael for calling the LTH game, Ursula and her team for keeping the drinks flowing, and everyone who came out to play and support! We’ll be back next week playing in support of Morongo Basin Ambulance with great prizes in the mix.

No gift meant for you will miss you. When the call comes, your only job is to answer. When Wren asked if I could help take care of the ranch while she was away, I didn’t mention my (imo v healthy) fear of horses and bees, allergy to hay, or desire to be surfing on water in 75 degree weather rather than working under the 103 degree desert sun—I just said “YES!” To be asked to care for a place as sacred as @hawkandhorse ranch is not only an honor, but a blessing and a gift. To be able to give back, to steward this land, to co-caretake with the horses, the plants—the more-than-humans—is something I will never take for granted or turn my back to. The responsibility and reverence that comes with a job like this, in a place like this, for a friend like her, is something people write books about, spiritually awaken to, and are forever changed by—I know I am. Epona and Sunny girl—thank you for trusting in us and allowing us to be a small part of your care and routine these past few days. You are wise beyond lifetimes and your presence never ceases to bring me to my knees—always with teary eyes (the hay helps). Watching Amanda interact so freely with the horses was like witnessing Jesus walk on water. A girl who screams for me when the tiniest of spiders is within 10 feet of her had no reservations being in communion—nose-to-nose—with giants. I couldn’t make sense of any of it, I could only be in awe as a witness. And it was then that the Grinch’s heart grew three sizes. Eventually, I was able to surrender (are you picking up on the theme yet?) and trust in these gentle giants, but not without a nibble—the same way my grandma used to pinch me as a kid and smile knowingly. We snapped photos when we remembered our phones existed, but mostly we spent our time completely present in our surroundings—spending hours drenched in sticky sweat without a desire to be anywhere else. Meet the dream team. 💜 This is the Board of Directors of Aspen & Elder, and I still can’t quite believe I get to build alongside them. When I started, this was just a vision I was carrying mostly on my own. A space where people of all ages can gather across culture, race, age, socioeconomic status, and identity. A place run by women, with offerings designed to hold mothers and women, families, creativity, elders, queer folks, and our local community. A belief that generations are healthier when their lives are woven together, that no one should move through the hard parts alone. Saying that out loud, and asking these women to step in, meant risking a no. But I’ve learned that the only way to find out who will show up for something is to actually ask. Every one of them is a woman already building something of her own: @yourmomracesrally A matrescence educator, speaker, and author, devoted to supporting women through the transition into motherhood. @thrivewithzen A Navy veteran and grant strategist who helps nonprofits build sustainable, grant-ready foundations. @loveschool.u A social-emotional educator and curriculum designer, who believes relationships are at the heart of lifelong learning. @plantsandprovisions A clinical herbalist making plant medicine accessible through her apothecary and traveling mobile shop. @swoonstudioco A creative space-maker whose shop, studio, and events space bring people together. @hawkandhorse A former teacher turned equine-healing guide, tending a desert sanctuary. @windsofchangesac A trauma-informed somatic practitioner and menstrual cycle coach helping women live in a way that honors their bodies and histories.
