Back in January, the BGS Period Project welcomed @painstories_uob from the University of Bath as part of a nationwide research project exploring how period pain impacts participation in school life. As part of the research, Pain Stories led a creative workshop with pupils from across the Senior School. From those discussions, artist @hazel.mead has created this incredible Pain Portrait, capturing many of experiences shared. We're delighted to have been gifted this artwork, which will be proudly displayed in school as a reminder of the important work our Period Project group continues to do.

One of our staff members commented: "I showed it to the [workshop] group and there was a lot of excited squealing as they recognised the bits they had drawn or spoken about. They loved it!"

🎉It’s about time we reveal another Pain Portrait! Here’s portrait 5/6 created by creative mastermind @hazel.mead 🌟

🎨This portrait is based on students’ discussions from a school in Hampshire, where we ran another one of our arts-based workshops exploring beliefs and myths surrounding periods and period pain.

✨ There are so many important ideas represented here – what jumps out to you most?

💬 We love hearing about how each school plans to use their portrait to promote period positivity. Here's what one of the staff members had to say about how the portrait will be used: ‘We are currently looking at displaying the art on our PSHE notice board, and outside the matrons' room. We will be working in September…to see if we can incorporate the work into PSHE assemblies…and then discussing in tutor time.’

Welcome to Instagram, Pain Portrait 4! 🌟

🎨 Here is portrait 4/6 that @hazel.mead created based on our arts-based workshops with students. This portrait is from a school in Berkshire!

💪 There are lots of myths being busted in this portrait, check out the bottom left-hand corner.

✨The students also taught us the legend of Hindu goddess Sati, who is celebrated at her time of menstruation. We learnt so much!

🏫 Students and teachers shared some of the things that support a positive culture around periods at school, such as displaying period products openly to help normalise them, having an anonymous puberty question box, and making period lessons fun and interactive.

💬 It’s so exciting to hear from schools when they receive their portrait in the post. Here is a recent comment from a staff member: ‘The artwork is stunning and serves as an important reminder of what our pupils experience on a daily basis, managing their periods and period pain alongside school.’

Love this month’s mail from Hazel — and I’m so proud that she chose my suggestion for this month’s mythical woman (or, in this case, mythical women)! ✨

The Morai are the legendary Greek Fates, the weavers of destiny, so it’s only fitting that Hazel included a little fortune teller to accompany them. 🔮

And, of course, my fortune was delightfully spooky… exactly as expected. 👻

Portrait 3 Reveal 🙌

🎨 Take a look at @hazel.mead’s third beautiful portrait based on another one of our school workshops! This workshop was held at a school in Surrey.

💡 Just like the previous portraits, this one is packed with ideas – explore every corner!

✨ A standout moment from this workshop came from a brilliant group of Year 9 boys.
They drew a chameleon to represent period myths and stigma, highlighting how myths often blend into social norms, going unnoticed and unchallenged. Spot on!

💬 The portrait has been shared with the school. Here's what they had to say after seeing the portrait: “I appreciate that the artwork represents different experiences people go through during their period...I relate to some parts, and I know my friends relate to other parts.”

🌟 Our remaining three portraits are in the final stages of production. As soon as they've been sent to their respective schools, we'll share them here. More to come from us soon!

How heavy is your period really? Technically we say 80ml total across the period but what does 80ml of period blood actually looks like, by period product?

The medical threshold for heavy bleeding is more than 80ml across a whole period, which is far less than most people imagine. Here is roughly what that looks like in a tampon, a pad, a cup and period underwear, plus when heavier bleeding is worth getting checked.

Portrait 2 Reveal! 🌟

🎨 Hello to the second portrait created by @hazel.mead , based on students’ discussions during our arts-based workshop at a school in Leicestershire!

✨ There’s so much covered here from period myths and education, to period pain and ways to promote period positivity at school.

🏫 Students shared some of the things they would like to see in schools: anonymous question boxes, period passes for the bathroom, more staff education (this was echoed in our staff interviews too!), and period lessons with a greater focus on wellbeing (not just biology).

💬 Here's what one student had to say after seeing the portrait displayed at school: ‘As a male, I feel more informed about the experiences of my friends and family members and have a better idea how I can support them when they are on their period. I also really appreciate the inclusivity of the artwork, that it shows people of different faiths and ethnicities.’

Most people go through many physical, emotional, and psychological changes after giving birth. It’s important for all of us to be aware of these postpartum changes, in order for us to support the parents in our communities.

As shown in the graphic, @hazel.mead illustrates the different postpartum experiences parents can go through.

20 years of Esska means a LOT of shoes. The first ever collection was made of 2 styles. Then 19... followed by 36... and every season it grew… new designs, new ideas, new heels, new materials, new shapes…. With only two must haves: comfort and some kind of minimal look.
Now, our collections are around 64 styles per season, and each style comes in several colour ways and widths.

When I looked back at all the shoes I have designed throughout the years (beautifully illustrated by @hazel.mead), I could see the aesthetic, but also I could see the evolution. Some of these designs I now find sooooo ugly. But clearly I must have liked them at the time!!!
The truth is, they are all my babies. They all have a story to tell…. I remember where and when and how every shoe was created, and where the materials come from.

Here is to another 20 years of shoes....

Portrait 1 Reveal! 🎉

🎨 We are so excited to share the very first portrait that our amazing illustrator @hazel.mead has created, based on the discussions from our first school workshop in the Bristol area.

🖊️Our arts-based workshops explored beliefs and myths about period pain. They involved students drawing and writing directly onto paper tablecloths, giving Hazel the raw material to bring their own ideas to life in a final portrait...and here it is!

Some standout moments from this first workshop include:
🐝Period cramps being described as flies and wasp stings - the analogies between periods and pain were vivid and powerful.

❌Student discussing how period pain can be dismissed, invalidated and misunderstood.

🏫Students sharing how schools can cultivate a period-positive culture by providing free period products, having lessons with a greater focus on wellbeing (not just biology), and encouraging more open conversation about periods (that involve boys too!).

💬 The portrait has now been gifted to and displayed in the school. Here's what a staff member had to say after sharing the portrait with students: "I showed it to the [workshop] group today and there was a lot of excited squealing as they recognised the bits they had drawn or spoken about. They loved it."
