I’ve been saying Happy Homecoming since Autumn hit, but the unofficial kickoff felt like the HBCU Golf Tournament earlier this month. I didn’t have any expectations but ended up having a blast and met great people doing great things. ⛳️

The @hbcugolftournament supports domestic violence prevention programs at Howard University and Spelman College. A well done event for a necessary cause.👏🏾👏🏾💜

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned through my own healing is that you can understand why someone behaves a certain way without accepting how they treat you.

You can have compassion for their experiences without making yourself responsible for their healing.

And you can forgive someone without giving them access to you.

I’ve spent years doing my own work, and these are some of the lessons I’ve carried with me.

Healthy relationships require accountability, boundaries, and a willingness to do the work.

And none of us should have to lose ourselves trying to save someone else. 💜

Bison Impact Group, Inc. (BIG) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) introducing Black people to golf for relational wellness and fundraising to stop violence against women and children. Our programming is designed for new and novice Black golfers (ages 7+), as nationally less than 3% of recreational golfers are Black.

BIG partners with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to end domestic and intimate partner violence, the leading cause of death for Black women under-45. Funds raised directly support Howard University’s Interpersonal Violence Prevention Program (IVPP) and Spelman College’s Violence Prevention and Intervention Program (VP&I).

For a long time, I thought forgiveness was something you did for the person who hurt you.

Today, I see it differently.

For me, forgiveness means I’ve done the work to heal from the trauma I experienced. Along that journey, I learned more about why people hurt others and the work they may need to do within themselves.

Years later, my ex apologized, and we talked through what happened. He had started doing some of that work, too.

Understanding his experiences didn’t excuse his actions. But it helped me understand something I hadn’t understood before.

This is my experience with forgiveness. I’m not suggesting that everyone should reconnect with the person who hurt them, and I don’t believe forgiveness is a requirement for healing.

Your healing belongs to you. 💜

You could hit 90 shots and let ONE convince you that you can’t play golf.

Meanwhile, the solid drives, the tricky putt you made and that bunker you escaped? Apparently, those don’t count.

I know because I’ve done it. Played a decent round, then gone home discussing the shots I wish I could take back.

Wanting to improve is healthy. Refusing to give yourself credit until everything is perfect gets exhausting.

You’re allowed to be proud of a round that still needs work. You’re allowed to enjoy a game you haven’t mastered.

Save this for the day you forget how far you’ve come. And send it to the golf friend who needs reminding that a missed putt isn’t a character flaw.
