Does this sound familiar?

These thoughts feel convincing because they’re automatic, not because they’re true ❤️‍🩹

Sometimes changing the question changes the thought 🌸

We often rush about and push forward without noticing what’s around us.

Our minds naturally become better at seeing what we repeatedly pay attention to.

Slow down & protect your peace 🩷

Noticing something more doesn’t mean it’s happening more. It simply means your brain is looking for it 🫧

Your brain isn’t trying to make you anxious, it’s trying to protect you

When we believe something is dangerous, our attention naturally shifts towards anything that supports that belief. The more we scan for danger, the more we notice it, reinforcing the feeling that the threat is everywhere

Psychologists call this process is called threat monitoring (also known as attentional bias or selective attention) and is one of the cognitive (thought) processes that helps maintain anxiety.

You’ll notice I completely lose my train of thought while my mum happily takes over 🤣… I mean she is the qualified and experienced psychotherapist after all!

The reality is that forgetting what you were about to say happens to everyone. It can become more noticeable when we’re:
🧠 concentrating really hard
😅 feeling a little anxious
😴 tired
📚 juggling lots of information at once

Our attention is limited so when something interrupts our train of thought, it’s completely normal to lose it for a moment.

The term “brain fog” isn’t a medical diagnosis. People often use it to describe feeling mentally slower, forgetful or finding it harder to concentrate. It can be associated with many things, including stress, poor sleep, menopause, illness, some medical conditions and certain medications!

Anyways… back to the topic…

People pleasing isn’t usually about being “too nice”

For many people, it develops as a way of maintaining relationships, avoiding conflict or seeking approval. Over time, this can become linked to beliefs such as:

🤍 “I need to make everyone happy”
🤍 “I’m only worthy if I’m helpful”
🤍 “If people are upset with me, I’ve done something wrong”

For some people, these patterns may also relate to the fawn response which is one way our nervous system responds to perceived threat by prioritising keeping others happy or maintaining connection ❤️‍🩹

PEOPLE PLEASING & Altruism PART 4 | A Psychotherapist Explains…

✨ Altruism says:
“I want to help”

✨ People-pleasing says:
“I have to help or they might be upset with me”

The behaviour can look the same.
The motivation is often very different.

Healthy relationships make space for both compassion and boundaries. You don’t have to sacrifice yourself to be a caring person ❤️

🎙️ We didn’t expect our first podcast clip to include anxiety, a hot flush and to stumble over our words 😂 why is it when a camera is in front of your face, all knowledge flies out of the window 🤣?!

But underneath the laughs is an important reminder:

Anxiety often isn’t about what’s happening right now, it’s about worrying about what might happen.

The need for certainty can keep anxiety alive but life was never designed to be completely predictable.

What part of uncertainty do you find hardest?

How to improve your mood ☝️

When we’re feeling low, we often do less.

When we do less, our mood often gets lower. Please stop waiting to feel motivated!

Motivation usually comes after the first step.

This is the principle behind Behavioural Activation which is an evidence-based psychological approach backed by research and shown to be effective in improving low mood.

One small action today could be the beginning of changing how you feel.

When Anxiety Wants To Control, Choose Awareness Instead:

🧠 Feeling Overwhelmed? Read This.

Other people, the world and life circumstances aren’t always the problem.

Sometimes anxiety convinces us that if we think about something enough, worry about it enough or try hard enough, we’ll eventually be able to control it.

For many people, worry can feel productive. It can create the illusion that we’re solving a problem or preparing for the worst.

But often, worry keeps us stuck focusing on things outside of our control.

It’s also easier to look outward than inward 🙌

It’s easier to focus on what other people are doing, what they should change or who is to blame than it is to reflect on our own thoughts, feelings and responses. But the truth is, some things are simply outside of our control.

🌱The future
🌱Other people’s opinions
🌱Unexpected changes
🌱How other people feel

The more energy we spend trying to control these things, the more overwhelmed and anxious we can become.

Instead, bring your focus back to yourself and what you can control:

🤍 Your choices
🤍 Your boundaries
🤍 Your effort
🤍 How you speak to yourself
🤍 How you respond to challenges

When anxiety feels overwhelming, focus your energy on what is within your control and practise letting go of what isn’t.

Doing this can help bring you back to the present moment, reduce overwhelm and build your resilience over time.

💭 Take a moment to reflect:

What is taking up most of your energy right now?

Is it something within your control or something you may need to let go of?

📌 Save this post for when life feels overwhelming. (Educational Content by Anna)
