Years ago I met Jane Yolen and her daughter Heidi Stemple at one of my first New England SCBWI conferences (the second pic is of Jane as the queen at NESCBWI’s 50th!). I couldn’t have predicted how much that meeting would change my life for the better. Whether listening to Jane on a panel or around her kitchen table, I learned as much from her spirit of generosity as I did from her deep expanse of knowledge of the craft, history, and industry of children’s literature. She was the first person who made me think I could possibly be an editor by noticing and remarking upon my ability to critique effectively. She and Heidi rescued me from actual and metaphorical storms. She supported and nurtured my work in so many ways, and most of all had a heavy hand in creating one of my all-time favorite humans (@heidieys) and introducing one of the most powerful friendship and creative circles in my life (🦤🦤🦤🦤). I am among the countless lives, minds, and hearts touched by Jane, the wings of her words, the soaring flight of her kindness. My heart aches for Heidi, Jason, Adam, their children, and their extended family. I send all of my love to them during this raw time. Rest in story, dear Jane.

PART 1: #NCTE25 ended a whole week ago but the memories from Denver are still fresh. Loved meeting educators, attending sessions, and seeing so many folks I admire from different slices of the kidlit community. Thanks @nctegram!

What if you write a book? It’s been a month since BEFORE I LIVED HERE published. The book is by me, Victo Ngai, and Neal Porter Books. It’s been fun to see it out in the world, but before it was a book I met many writers in Texas, Colorado, Georgia, Alabama, and on Zoom. I attended many conferences, critique groups, and book-ish events. And, I’ve written in libraries in multiple states along the way.
