NBA Season Preview: Miami Heat 🔥🏀 (9/30)

The Heat finally land their big whale after going after what it seems nearly every available star. They traded away nearly every pick and young player their disposal to land a player many consider to be a top 5 player in the league in Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Their defense will be elite there’s no doubt about that, but where people hesitate is the offense. Is there enough shooting? Who’s going to create in the half court offense? Is Giannis alone enough?

What do you think of the Miami Heat this season? 🤔

Bam and Giannis could give Miami more freedom to switch while keeping help around the basket. When Bam takes the ball-handler, Giannis can rotate behind him, allowing Miami to use Bam’s mobility without asking him to recover and protect the rim on the same possession.

In the Databallr comparison covering 2021-22 through 2025-26, Giannis has a rim differential of -11.3 percentage points against Bam’s -1.6. That compares opponents’ shooting on their contests with their usual percentages, so a more negative number means they finished less efficiently. Giannis also records more blocks per 75 possessions. Those results support using him around the basket, although the gap is partly shaped by their assignments and the situations in which they contest shots.

Bam records more steals and deflections in this sample, with 1.8 steals and 3.5 deflections per 75 possessions compared with Giannis’s 1.5 and 2.6. Those numbers capture some of his activity around the ball, but his ability to stay in front of guards can help without producing either event. Forcing a ball-handler to give it up and restart the possession is useful defensive work that these columns won’t fully capture.

The numbers come from different teams and roles, so there’s still some projection involved in putting them together. Rim tracking also leaves out possessions where a defender discourages an attempt altogether. Miami could use Bam more aggressively on the perimeter with Giannis behind him, but that option depends on the opposing lineup. If Giannis has to stay attached to a shooter, the help responsibilities fall elsewhere, and the other three defenders still have to rotate and rebound.
