Our speakers: Hedda Andersen is an experienced guide, expedition leader, and climate science communicator with a deep passion for understanding the rapidly changing environment of Svalbard. A resident since 2018, she studied glaciology at the University of Oslo and the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS). Since 2019, she has guided visitors through Svalbard’s extreme landscapes year-round, sharing her expertise on the profound impacts of climate change, particularly on glaciers.

As an expedition leader, Hedda navigates polar waters in Svalbard, Greenland, and Antarctica, witnessing firsthand the accelerating transformations in these fragile environments. She has dedicated years to climate science communication, educating thousands of visitors about the urgent realities of glacial retreat and environmental shifts in the Arctic and Antarctic. In a groundbreaking initiative, she spearheaded the first successful citizen science collaboration between Hurtigruten Svalbard and UNIS, engaging travelers in meaningful scientific research.

Hedda is also committed to integrating climate education into Svalbard’s tourism industry. She collaborates closely with Visit Svalbard to enhance climate communication among guides and operators, ensuring that responsible storytelling becomes an industry standard. In 2026, she will introduce climate communication as a core module in the Svalbard Guide Education Programme, equipping future guides with the knowledge to convey the region’s dramatic changes to visitors.

Through her leadership, research, and outreach, Hedda is at the forefront of connecting people with the realities of a warming Svalbard, using science and storytelling to inspire awareness and action.

How much do you think Norwegian culture is influenced by the oil business?

How do Norwegians deal with the paradox that parts of Norway are located in the Barents Sea region, warming fastest in the world and at the same time, Norway is the largest offshore oil exploration and production investor in the world?

What needs to change on the level of culture and education for Norway to be future-proof?

The next hybrid webinar of Arctic Climate Action Svalbard addresses these questions and more:

Hedda Andersen (@adventureglaciologist, guide and climate communicator) will present how the climate crisis impacts Svalbard and how it is to work outside in a rapidly changing environment, while Julie Forchhammer (@julieforchh, co-founder of @klimakultur) explains how the oil industry influences Norwegian culture, education and politics, leading to an escalating climate crisis in Svalbard and beyond.

Norway is a paradoxical country: Part of its landmass is located in the Barents Sea, warming fastest in the world, five to seven times faster than the global average. At the same time, in 2024, Norway has been the largest investor in offshore oil production worldwide.

The next hybrid webinar of Arctic Climate Action Svalbard sheds light onto these records and the role of the Norwegian people in this paradoxon: Hedda Andersen (@adventureglaciologist, guide and climate communicator) will present how the climate crisis impacts Svalbard and how it is to work outside in a rapidly changing environment, while Julie Forchhammer (@julieforchh, co-founder of @klimakultur) explains how the oil industry influences Norwegian culture, education and politics, leading to an escalating climate crisis in Svalbard and beyond.
