INTERFACING AS PRACTICE: Modulating Spirals and Sonic Ferments

The BFA Programme, Jindal School of Liberal Arts & Humanities (JSLH) is pleased to invite you to a session with Rahul Juneja, exploring the detection of Hekh, its stakes, agents, modulators and ongoing modulations—situating framework building as an expansive form of artistic practice.

The session asks: How do we move in, with and through the worlds we inherit, inhabit and invent as cultural practitioners? What new vocabularies, protocols and infrastructures must be conjured to sustain these inquiries?

I recently (around June 2026) wrote a graphic essay for a publication, Hekh ( @hekh.in ), titled “Print, Publishing, Pedagogy, and the Practicality of its Co-existence.”

It is a reflection of my own academic journey into the professional art field, what I have learned, where my gaps lie, and how I am navigating them.

Do give it a read.

Indira road, Panthopath, Dhaka. আলাপের ধরন: একদম ঘরোয়া পরিবেশ (বিপদ হইতে সাবধান) Kaali Collective/time–terrace–transit ~ Some unions emerge not as sites, but as an ethos—a deeper holding. Kaali unfolds as a recurring convergence: an ongoing reunion shaped through subjective association, collateral dialogue, and shared acts of attention. Kaali exists both as a site and as a condition—a space for safe nesting. ~ It is a collective situation, held together through mutual remembering rather than saturated movement. Ideas circulate, pause, fracture, and return through conversation, popular media, and everyday encounters. Anecdote 1: Memory within Kaali is not stored as record, but activated as a living force—associative, unstable, and relational—carried through voices, urban textures, and informal pedagogies. Anecdote 2: Like the city, Kaali is encountered as both context and collaborator. Streets, domestic thresholds, studios, and transit routes become sites of intervention where artistic practice meets lived experience. Reading and sharing within the collective deepen the meaning of intervention. These practices resist monumental gestures; instead, they work through small-scale exposures—reading together, listening collectively, occupying time rather than space. Key note: Popular media plays a crucial role here—not as spectacle, but as access: a means to engage wider publics without flattening complexity. ~ In this unfolding, we operate as a porous and collateral formation—open to rupture, return, and reconfiguration. We privilege process over consequence, correspondence over conclusion, and care over impulse. We remain hopeful that this dialogue will continue to expand. Long live!$

…Crossing time is always a sensitive act, especially when one must move through internal contradictions. In navigating this collateral time—where life unfolds amid ongoing turbulence—we find that this moment creates a new register of understanding, rooted in cohesive listening.

We are currently in Dhaka, revisiting overlapping memories. It is a saturated landscape, one we have long inhabited with the hope that diversity might continue to breathe through forms of alliance and shared engagement.

1
Returning after many months, we felt the need to revise our modes of communication. We began instead from the re-imagination of uncanny absence. This led us to a personal space—Ellora—where we encountered a strong ethic of plurality and a sustainable practice of living as observation. This collaboration felt especially resonant as we move forward, attempting to hold and accommodate wider voices shaped by contrast and confluence.

During this gathering, we shared our travelling publications and carried forward our mapping practice, where markers of time are traced through personal imagination. We also introduced the fourth chapter from Ant-Through-Push-In, shared alongside warm food and tea.

2
Without creating noise or a distinct spectacle, we felt an urgent need to re-listen—more than to accumulate. Following that feeling, this travelling initiative is curious to engage and communicate while travelling—moving from station to halt, from junction to an ally’s balcony, from institution to tong-er dokan, from roads to hills, from hills to rivers—carrying this alap forward as an extended mode of communication.

Each time we anchor our unsettled emotions, we encounter new thresholds of partition—*in* and *out*—where recalling is not only reacting, but also corresponding. This time, we were in Shantiniketan, Goyalpara, near Kopai—a river that still lives in our nostalgia.

Can nostalgia survive alone in the time of invisible partition?

Anchor 1/ Kopai is more than a river; it holds the non-linearity of time, absorbing destruction and neglect under the name of globalization. As we unfolded our travelling materials, we noticed how reading is often treated as knowing rather than engaging. We stayed low-key, sharing slowly in our friend’s intimate space—becoming a meeting point for books, tea, and alap. For several unstructured hours, we read, shared fragments, and listened with care.

Anchor 2 / The alap continued with a reading from Ant-Through-Push-In: Situation 3, alongside our close friend and commune Renu, visiting from London. Through impromptu co-dialogue—music, text, and absence—Renu offered not just sound but consciousness, reminding us that partition is not accidental, but layered and ongoing.

Anchor 3 / As night fell, the alap stretched beyond the space. We spoke of time as *now', the future as 'then*, and the cost of impulsive action—returning to our own neglects and opening space for further introspection.

Much care to Samit, Moushumi, zoro for inviting us—and to all the folx who joined, even during a holiday time here 💚🌺

$'এমন পরিস্থিতিতে আপনার অনুভুতি কি?’ -as we stretch, we continue the আলাপ/alap. নোঙ্গর - বেতড়, বাকশারা, হাওড়া ☘️ Milton’s Studio / 26 December, 2025 While absorbing the delayed aftereffects of a fourteen-hour transit(Delhi to Kolkata, via kanpur), we felt a lazy momentum intervene—an insistence that drew us toward our first outpost at Milton’s studio. Milton has been a long-standing ally of zmayet, there with us from the very beginning, from the first scratch. Milton is based in Betor, Howrah. His neighbourhood carries an emotional coherence shaped by the invisible river Saraswati—much like our own transit, his home is situated within a frame of correspondence, where life brushes against myth, and time encounters its cultural plurality. A practicing painter and educator from the city, Milton’s work explores interpersonal and collective experiences with an open-ended orientation related to the concept of ‘left’, especially exploring practice more than achievement but as friendship. Much care for such delicious food, onek jotno to kakima and kaku for so much effort, felt like sharing shelter with hope that we exit! 🍲💚 As we began this journey carrying a set of books, notes, and publications from across the Global South—materials in which movement, shift, and rapture are embedded within collective experience—we approached Milton to engage with and share his methods of reading fractured time. Through this exchange, we opened multiple areas of reflection around reading, readability, and restlessness, confronting our fears, scars, and unease, and asking why and where the necessity of “publications” continues to matter as a source of inspiration and encounter. During this exchange, Tilottama and Kaur began the process of slow reading from one chapter of the first issue of 'Ant-Through-Push-In' as a way to revisit and share alignments. We look forward to continuing this flow through another outpost, another bank of time. !$
