Wellness has become very good at giving us more things to do. Hélène Barkman prefers a simpler equation.

For the Becore founder, feeling good can mean a hard workout or a cold swim, but just as easily art, a long breakfast, dinner with friends or a night that ends far too late.

Her Nordic edit follows the same logic: Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, Pom & Flora and Sperling & Co in Stockholm, Louisiana in Denmark, Helenekilde by the sea – and the morning swim she considers the most Nordic ritual of all.

Funny how Stockholm’s most interesting new wellness space & one of its buzziest restaurant openings are essentially selling the same thing: atmosphere as a form of care.
At Becore’s new Karlaplan studio, founder Hélène Barkman brought in architect Johannes Sverlander to shape an environment where wellness starts long before the class itself. Oxblood tones quietly picked up in the stone reappearing as window sills throughout the space, sculptural seating, warm lighting, glossy black details, leather touches & Becore’s signature water station recurring in every studio like a tiny ritual of civilisation. Less “gym”, more calibrated nervous system regulation.
Meanwhile Villa Valentina up on Mälarterrassen skipped the entire Scandinavian fear of sensuality altogether. Murano chandeliers everywhere, mosaic floors, generous upholstery, hand-painted walls, dogs happily allowed under the tables & acoustics soft enough to hear actual conversation w/o performing amateur lip reading across lunch. And yes, stylish dogs are very much included.
The kitchen moves btw Spain & the wider Mediterranean w/ sympathetic pricing, strong produce & a welcome lack of culinary ego. A rare Stockholm combo.
Also: can we collectively retire the phrase rooftop? Villa Valentina technically sits above another restaurant, yes, but this feels more like a sky verandah, a suspended greenhouse, a Mediterranean winter garden hovering over Slussen.
The truly impressive part? Maintaining that calm, almost hotel-like lunch ambience despite 400 seats, panoramic views & what will inevitably become one of Stockholm’s busiest locations this summer. We sincerely hope they protect that atmosphere like national treasure status.
Henrik Huldschiner suggested adding sun loungers among the greenery upstairs. Frankly, he’s onto something there. Slussen is quietly turning into Stockholm’s new restaurant micro-district. Eight restaurants in total, yet Villa Valentina rather strategically grabbed the prime perch first✨
