‘As the world gets more and more scary, warmth, kindness, values and community are increasingly important’💫

Helen Fielding, the creator of Bridget Jones, joined @bbcnuala on Tuesday to reflect on why, as we celebrate three decades of one of Britain’s most beloved fictional heroines, Gen Z women are finding comfort in her character.

@helenfielding thinks there are similarities between the pressures facing young women today and the themes of authenticity and messiness that made her novels so popular 30 years ago.

Helen also spoke about The Bridget Jones Prize, which she’s just launched with the Newcastle-based charity New Writing North to showcase fresh, funny first-person writing. She told Nuala what she loves about northern humour, and why she’s on the hunt for the next generation of comedy writers from the North of England.

🎧 Listen to the full discussion on @bbcsounds - it’s the Woman’s Hour episode from 20 October.

The inimitable @helenfielding launched the Bridget Jones Prize with New Writing North, at an event hosted by the Independent last night.

The Yorkshire-born creator of the era-defining comic character Bridget Jones hopes that the prize will discover a brilliant Northern comedy writer. The prize will become part of our Northern Writers' Awards for the next three years and is for unpublished and unagented comic writing talent.

The winner and one highly commended entrant will be selected on the strength of the funniest 1,000-word piece of first-person stand-alone prose in a nod to Bridget's famous diary entries from the mid-90s.

Fielding hopes to honour the Northern comic tone which inspired her own writing, from comedy legends including Morecambe and Wise, Victoria Wood, Les Dawson, Thora Hird and Alan Bennett.

The prize will open on 23 November but more detail on eligibility is on our website so get thinking about your entry! And as Helen says "this is for the funniest standalone, first-person 1,000 words. If it’s slightly under you won’t be punished. Just DON’T MAKE IT ANY LONGER!”
